It's honestly not surprising. Almost everyone is playing Destiny 2, I mean the hype is crazy right now. Shadowkeep has so many people playing it as well as the fact that Destiny 2 is now free (to an extent), which brought in a ton of new players. The servers can't handle it all and I don't think Bungie was prepared for that.

There was also a lot of people unpacking the game that finally got the chance to try it out and it's later in the day now so more people are logging in. Having the game be free and also have a big expansion come out on the same day was really a death sentence to begin with.
