What guns to go after as a free to play player?
I also want to get the one eye mask. Do I need a dlc for that?

seconding this.

which are the "go to" guns, especially for a new, F2P player?

any tips/things to look out for, to make the journey less painful and more fun?

MIDA multi tool, It is a really easy exotic quest and its probably going to be really good after the scout rifle buff. Every time a scout rifle buff has happened in the history of Destiny, MIDA has always came out on top.

As a new player you should have access to all the PvP pinnacle weapons. Recluse, Luna's Howl, Mountaintop etc.

A lot of year 1 exotics can probably still hold their own. Vigilance wing. Sunshot will be buffed.

But maybe play some PvE and getting used to the game before going for those. Good nonforsaken handcannon.. probably Better Devils.

A lot of the iron banner weapons are not bad either. You'll prob have access to those?

Most of named weapons are DLC contents.
Some generic named weapons are DLC stories rewards.
So, You can get any generic weapon you like, that has better stats, or any looted weapons you get,as F2P, I assume you won't get DLC items from loot containers(as named engrams). Most weapons stats are random. Your best shot is customization.

Don't worry about what guns to go for. They all have good and bad points, but all are enjoyable. You will find favourites, and upgrade them, until you discover even more powerful ones, then you'll kiss your fav gun a fair, fond, farewell and embrace another mightier one to enjoy ;)

Not entirely sure about that, actually. OEM is a world-drop exotic, not tied to a specific quest or activity, and I think Forsaken World-Drop Exotics are available to you as a New Light player, but I'm not entirely sure. Bungie clarified a few exotics that are available in New Light, but all of those exotics have, or had, specific activity content tied to them.

The Nine-Tailed Fox, the Exotic rocket launcher awarded for pre-ordering Shadowkeep, is also a Y2 World-Drop Exotic and it would go against Bungie's established policy to grant a pre-order bonus that isn't obtained in that content. Bungie has also said that Y2 World-Drop Exotics are going to be added to a weekend vendor's possible inventory, another suggestion that New Light players will be able to get them.

But like I said I'm not 100% sure on this.

One Eyed Mask is locked behind the Forsaken DLC. As for weapons, doing any of the weapon frames from Ada-1 in the Forges will definitely net you some good gear. Also, upgrading your Chalice of Opulence is an overall good way to grind for god-rolls of specific guns you want. Just look up infographics for the Menagerie weapons and armor to see how to make specific gear. I recommend Austringer.

Before the nerf i would've said the go to gun is whisper of the worm (basically if u didnt have it back then, no one would let u raid). Now i would say IKELOS shotgun would be an essential (damage boost from trench barrel) , huckleberry, thunderlord, tractor cannon. All of the ones I've mentioned are RNG except IKELOS shotgun.

Quite a few of the quests involve things like "Kill X mobs with Y gun in Z area". So regardless of your favourite, keep one of each type either on-hand (you can 'hold' 9 weapons per category: Kinetic / Energy / Power) or in your vault. Just in case.

Most weapons have damage falloff with range so +range is nice.
https://d2.destinygamewiki.com/wiki/Weapon_Perks (sort by 'Traits')

It's a bit outdated but I tend to go by;

SCOUT RIFLE
Stats: range
- Outlaw / Kill Clip

PULSE RIFLE
Stats: range, stability for controller
- Outlaw / Kill Clip / Rampage

AUTO RIFLE
Stats: range, stability for controller
- Rampage / Kill Clip / Outlaw

SUBMACHINE GUN
Stats: range, stability for controller is equal to range
- Kill Clip / Rampage / Outlaw / Moving Target

HAND CANNON
Stats: range, reload speed
- Outlaw / Kill Clip / Rampage

SIDEARM
Stats: range, handling
- Rangefinder / Kill Clip

BOW
Stats: Accuracy, draw time
- Archer's Tempo / Rampage

FUSION RIFLE
Stats: Range, stability for controller
- Rangefinder / Backup Plan / Rampage

SHOTGUN
Stats: Impact, narrow spread, range
- Full Auto / Moving Targets / Quickdraw / Slideshot

SNIPER RIFLE
Stats: Range, handling, low magnification
- Snapshot Sights / Outlaw / Kill Clip

GRENADE LAUNCHER (SINGLE FIRE) AND GRENADE LAUNCHER (BARREL)
Single fire stats: blast radius, reload speed
Barrel stats: blast radius, velocity
- Quickdraw / Rampage / Proximity Grenades

SWORD
Stats: Impact PvE, range PvP
- Relentless Strikes / Whirlwind Blade

ROCKET LAUNCHER
Stats: blast radius, velocity, reload
- Cluster Bombs / Tracking Module / Quickdraw

LINEAR FUSION RIFLE
Stats: range, charge time
- Quickdraw / Snapshot Sights

Explosive Payload is something to look for also. Basically makes your bullets, explosive ones. Goes really well with those slow-firing but high damage guns? Scout Rifles, Hand Cannons... you never see it on certain categories... wonder why ^_^.

The Hakke made rocket launchers fires guided rockets. If you get a Hakke launcher that also has Cluster Bomb / Reloading Holster...

PvP usually plays quite differently from PvE.

Also Outbreak perfected, it is good primary weapon damage if others also use it.
