What's the best way to get exotic engrams?

I have a quest where I have to open an exotic engram. Like the title says what is the best way to get an exotic engram? Something to mention as well, I am power level 916 so I can't do Nightfall at Master difficulty or higher where exotic engrams are common.

IIRC, I don't think those Exotic that you get after killing NF boss count toward that quest because they're not from Engram instead just a possible reward. It's literally an Exotic Engram that you need to pick up on the floor or got sent to your mail box that would count toward that particular quest/pursuit. You can get these Engram from anything you do in game.

Extremely anecdotal but i've gotten like 2 or 4 exotic drops over the course of all 3 campaigns.

Boi you best prepare that soul of yours if you really wanna farm random exotic drops.

My advise is to NOT actively focus on that quest, just do other stuff(PvP, strikes, gambit, anything) and just hope for an exotic to drop :D

Note: random drops from powerful(and pinnacle) rewards also counts towards the quest

The best way to get exotic engrams are the Leviathan raids. Eater of Worlds and Spire of Stars both have a hidden chest that gives a guaranteed exotic engram. They pop out of the chest and you need to pick them up, so they'll count for the quest.

Public events/strikes/crucible can drop them to.. I got 2 so far, 1 from public event and 1 from the crucible.

Leveling npc's up should also get you a very small chance of getting them.

Actually, if you buy the exotic engram from xur. it still doesn't count, you need to get one trough drops.. The exotic engram that xur sells, also doesn't list/named itself as 'exotic engram'...

Well I had a quest that required me to open an exotic engram and this counted for me.

Was it the quest where you need to get:

- 5/10 legendary engrams.
- 1 Exotic engram.
- Defeat 10 fallen.


Because i had that one and buying the exotic engram from xur didn't count, luckily i got one 2 days later from a public event or a strike.

probably the easiest way to get an "exotic engram" is from heroic events.

Or just keep dismantling Legendary Gears and buy it off Xur
