WarPlan - pure wargame medium high complexity
SC3 - decision event system medium complexity
WarPlan - more like World in Flames.
SC3 - more like Order of Battle
I suggest looking at video for both then make a decision. They are very different in how they play. With the sale I would get both. Both are excellent games.
I developed WarPlan and I play both.
Since both are on sale now GET BOTH!!!! WarPlan is $30, SC3 $15 currently. Basically you get both games for the price of one of them,
Some players have put really nice color unit replacements for the counters.
You could also use 3d images.
But 3d images are incredibly expensive to purchase for a game and this was my 1st developed game.
On Matrix Games, War in the Pacific Admiral Edition wasnt bad, just wish the more realistic and i know that you guys working on Pacific version as well. Another game like War in the East, wasnt too fond with it, cause left out the action parts.
Also noticed there are working on part two War in the East, didnt really look into it yet. Been looking for some real actions in engagements with realistic war games during war world 2. Not very many good ones out there.
WarPlan is more complex than Strategic Command 3.
Actually I had to play the German offensive twice in WP. I'm still getting used to combat and overextended my panzer groups the first time and lost two of them at the gates of Paris. So I replayed it with just a little more caution while watching the combat power of the panzer groups better. You can attack repeatedly if you have operations points, and if you don't watch out, you can weaken a unit so much that it is vulnerable to a counterattack. I made that mistake, and the AI took advantage of it with an impressive counterattack. I'm more familiar with SC and didn't need a save scum to take Paris on schedule, though the AI did put up a good fight and repeatedly put units in good defensive positions while retreating.
Norway was interesting. In SC, the Axis can take Norway through a decision event. In WP, you have to take it yourself, and I had to watch a Youtube on invading Norway and then try that a couple of times to get it to work. It is a finesse operation.
A word on mods. I'm using the PHalen counter mod in WP, from the Matrix site. The big difference is that the air units are circular and offset a little in the hex. This makes it a lot easier to pick out the air units immediately. That mod has several other cosmetic changes that look good, but the air units is what I really like. There are several mods at the Matrix site and they are very easy to install.
In SC I'm using the Spires NATO counter mod that also uses circles for air units and uses hex-shaped counters for naval units and makes a few cosmetic improvements.
