squads of famous composers???

I was doing ok till I got trapped by the French colonel, forcing a desperate retreat to stay alive. Fortunately I survived, but then opened the main screen to see 6 or 8 red squads heading for my captured sectors. They were named Bach, Mendellsohn, Handel, and other composers; and they didnt look like the natives. I have capable mercs and modified weapons, but can't defend against that many 10-man squads going everywhere.
What the heck???

In storytelling this is called a reversal.

And going by the constant threads about it, this one is quite effective.

...and it usually happens about three-quarters of the way through the story, which is exactly when this one happens.

one time thing, you can run around and autoresolve most of them into oblivion and collect a pile of loot

Well, welcome to the midgame. Just take your holdings back. Those are actually 2 new enemy factions. The mercs (the ones with intricately named squads) are the more dangerous one of the two.

Only one thing to watch out, if you want to be able to keep turning in artifacts in Port Cacao, you have to protect the westernmost sector of Port Cacao where Emma is, it is easier to stop the invasion at the port where potentially the grandmas and the junkers will help you, but not in autoresolve.
