Some mods like the bipod need like 60 friggin parts, so if you got like, 59 or less parts, it will turn red with the X even tho you already got the mod equipped. Dont know why tho.
To test, drop all your parts into sector storage and try modding again. All your mod slots will be red.
Nah, they can put a different mod on.
For example: lets say you got 15 parts. You dont got enough to equip the bipod which cost 60 parts, even though you already have it equipped on the weapon, but the red X shows, but the handle that allows you to swap to the weapon for free, it cost 15 parts, and you can equip that as it has no red X. So we could put a different mod on it, even though the bipod shows an red X.
I personally experienced this.
It turns out that the "equipped mod" slot turns red if the player doesn't have the resources to build *any* of the mods for that type. As long as there is at least *one* buildable item for that category, it won't go red.
For the weapon example in the OP,
The mounted Red Dot isn't red because I can build a flashlight (but I don't have the chips for the tactical device).
The mounted Prism is red because I don't have lenses or chips to build any scope type mods.
