There are some quests that ask you to look for things in a general area, like along a specific stretch of road that's two or three screens long, which are a little more open-ended, but there are tricks to these like paying attention to which parts of the area you can access and haven't been to--many of these quests are related to getting a new traversal ability that allows you to access an area you couldn't originally reach.
There are a few quests that are game-spanning, like getting all the lore books or all the bad books, which don't give you specific hints. The bad books are AFAIK the only one that is unhinted; the lore books have the fortune teller to help you out. But there are only three bad books, and they're pretty easy to find.
