fastest way to get the most powerful ship class?
I've bought the game when it was on sale and just started playing it 2 days ago. (fun game btw, I guess they patched most of the things people used to complain about)
Anyway... I'm interested how long it usually takes to acquire a dreadnought class ship? Maybe I'm not earning cash as fast as I could (potentially)

Earning money really isn't a problem once you find the most lucrative method - pirating. Travel to sectors outside reach of official military, and simply intercept cargo ships and convoys. They are mostly an easy target. You only need at least 2nd or 3rd ship class, they have enough firepower to finish an attack quickly, and also enough shield to run away from a fight if you are surrounded by weak but numerous outlaw ships. If you continue to raid for valuable cargo like this (maybe even board and seize the entire ship) you'll have credits for a military beast in no time. Just beware not to do this in state controlled space, there well armed and trained patrols will dismantle your ship just like that

Agreed, pirating IS the best way to earn a lotta money, since trade routes are generated I believe, and the main thing is CAPTURING a vessel and selling it later on (you've gotta use a tractor beam to tow the vessel to a nearest station or so). The best way for money grabbin' :)

In addition, try taking random missions on stations. Some are easy but many times waypoints are close by and you can repeat them. That way you won't lose much time to acquire exp and money

Nobody mentioned, but another excellent way to speed your rise to power is Gladiatrix. You need to obtain Gladiators DLC for Starpoint Gemini. It is free and once installed, special installation will appear - the Gladiatrix station. There you can challenge the best captains in the system to a fight and place bets. If you survive you get experience and credits. In addition you can challenge multiple opponents or hardcore veterans. They are a tough nut to crack but rewards are huge

Wow, thanks for the replies! But im really surprised by the Gladiator DLC, does it come with the game or should i download it from somewhere? (If it's already in the game i might have missed it :S)
edit: sorry for the offtopic

Steam version comes with the Gladiators addon automatically. There aren't many Gladiatrix stations in Gemini, so accidentally missing it is possible. Try looking in the Will O The Wisp sector ;).

Remember to save up a ton of money, or sell your ship, before you're called in to do a certain space station defense story mission. Otherwise, you'll end up destroying all the enemies just because you can -> Proceed to complete the mission -> then watch as your ship gets blown up because there were "too many enemies" and someone had to stay behind as bait for the evacuation.

I think best way is to tack a good ship with the trector beam, flying to the next station which is not fromthe faction of the ship, bording it until your people are defended and then docking at the Station by quckly deactevating your shields, then leave the station and bord the ship agin until you have it.

There is mission where you need to defend some station, at the end of it you will lost your ship, no matter what. And you will get new one for free, but it will be frigate or destroyer as i remember. So, if you are flying something better like battleship or something, best way is to trade it before this mission for something cheaper,

oh ok den that makes sense. i was all like... sell my ship... then... jump out in a space suit with a laser pistol... defend the station... and profit?

If you use your starting ship, which has a decent number of troops, and capture rouges while mining silver/uranium asteroids and popping drifting containers in the first couple of sectors, you should be able to grind the 720000 for the Jupiter class dreadnaught in about 5 hrs (from start time). Upgrading your ship to a bigger (read more troop capacity) vessel first or selling components from your looted containers can signifiacntly cut time off of this, but remember to keep any large thrusters or engines, because otherwise your shiny new ship will CRAWL across the galaxy.

Why do enemy ships blow up captured ships? It doesn't make sense
