Thermal imaging view problem, very frustrating!
When I enter any view with a thermal image capability all I see is the required screen overlays, i.e. cross hair, compass view etc. I do not see any image of the terrain or targets, just a black screen. I go into optics view and chnge my view by selecting "N" and cycling the various views. I can see fine in the night vision mode and clear view, but no themal in either HOT White or Black, just a black screen. I am looking at landscape at night and this completely stumps me? I have looked at my keyboard settings and video options but I just cant get this view to work. Anyone else ever come across this or am I just way out in left field here?

no this is normal. Have AI move about and you will see movement. Either white hot or Black hot.. Tanks or armor wont necessarly show up either, terrain is cooler and shows as gray.
You are not alone. If I understand the question. hope this helps.

Thanks Sandman for the response. I have tested this with moving troops around in oper terrain, all I still get is a black screen. When I switch over to any other view mode I see the troops\movement. I just dont get it.

Here is a link to an image of my problem,

This is how it looks when using NV mode,

I am still baffled. If anyone can figure this out it would be appreciated.

You are confused about the thermal image and night vision.
The green screen is night vision and the black and white is thermal image.
Some weapons has only thermal vision, other has both (thermal and night vision) other has thermal images in red.
Use the key "N" to change the between thermal modes and/or night vision.

And there's two modes of thermal vision. One white and black your screen show the black mode (inverse thermal mode).
The inverse thermal mode show the background (at daty) at grey and the people on black. I think you are using the thermal mode at night and you can't see nothing.

The first image shows the thermal view I see on my screen, as you can see in the image it says just to the bottom left of the crosshair "MODE: TI WHOT". This is thermal is it not?

The second image is in green and the mode is "NV", which if I am correct stands for Night Vision. As you can still see in the first picture I provivded I still can not view anything in Thermal, either mode. Is it my graphics card, ARMA 3 settings?? I just cant figure this one out.

your TI whot is normal however your monitor gamma/contrast settings maybe are not ideal

also there is 2 other colorful thermal image, with scopes on rifles (nightstalker)

Thanks for all your help everyone. I did try the gamma/contrast settings in the game, no luck. I have also tried a full reinstall, again no change. I'll next try to reinstall the video drivers.

ok D. good Luck. Just realize that you are not alone. I get the same thing in game. It depends on what weapon and how i want to use it and if I can get it to work. Cheers, Sandman

I just rolled back my video drivers and no luck. I guess I'll just have to go without for now. I have searched online for similar issues like my problem but no luck. I"ll keep trying to find out what the problem is and if I find it I'll happily post it here. Maybe a possible update will resolve the issue? Thanks again to all!
I have the same problem but only in some workshop mission,i have a couple of screenshots on my profile to show my problem.

This is caused by the winter. Set your mission in July and see if it works.

Thanks for the suggestions. I had to roll back my PC to the original OS installation. All is good now. :)

I have come across this issue with certain mod weapons. This issue, as well as an issue where I will be aiming at something center mass, and the round strays waaaaay right or left.(mainly track vics) Maybe the poeple who made some mods did something wrong? Just my thoughts.

What some people experience as this problem, and admittedly it affects some thermal modes/iterations worse than others, is because BI puts the limited contrast range of the thermal stuff at one end of the whole available visual dynamic range curve rather than either putting it comfortably in the middle or synthetically stretching it out. That curve on a graph looks like kind of an S on its side, with a long middle section. This becomes an issue due to inadequacies of your monitor, the fact we don't see the foot or shoulder of the visual dynamic range as well as the middle, or both these issues in combination. Until BI fixes this with the thermals or someone makes a gamma, contrast, brightness, and saturation adjustment dedicated to thermal, you'll have to mess with either your monitor(s) settings, graphic card color adjustments, or Arma 3 video adjustments, or some combination. Be warned, doing so will make the strait non-goggle vision worse and maybe even the NVG worse, but at night the non-goggle stuff is not as important, and there are some NVG settings adjustment mods that you can use to compensate, though most of these will turn off randomly, it seems. This also means you'll have to switch the settings back to normal when playing a day mission.
