You can use any Texteditor out there. With your installed Microsoft Editor, or Notepad++. I would recommend to use a Texteditor with support of sqf language. You would have Variables, Booleans marked with colour and its easier to read and write.

SQF Editor[www.armaholic.com]
Dash[www.armaholic.com]

or you use your already installed Windows Editor.
right click on your mission.sqf - always open with editor - there you go.
By the way, sometimes the mission.sqm can be binarized. Then you have to load the mission in Arma and safe it as un-binarized. If you dont know the Mods you need for your mission.. Well play some other stuff....
u can also get the sqf extension for NP++

because your mission is binarized. you need to uncheck that when you go to save it in order to be able to read it.

I have similar problem, I'm trying to add music to a mission, sqf file but the Notepad is empty when I click on dexcription.ext. Running Win 7 and I have unchecked Folder option "Hide Ext"
I downloaded Audacity and save music file as .ogg but stil no joy.

your .ext is suppose to be empty, you add stuff to it that you want. watch my radio tutorial, it shows how to add in custom sounds using say3D
