anyway of course new good tools with good intention
and with security in mind (and/or open source) are always welcomed
ARMACon will be multi-server and will allow management of the server from in-game as well as other servers that are configured in ARMACon. (This is why I dislike the fact that the server doesn't report chat if no one "sees" it in game). It also has the option to parse the netlog so that you can map the SteamID to the be_guid (which was also messed up when the location of the netlog was moved, because if multiple servers are running, there is no way to tell which file is for which server without knowing the process ID).
When I built Paronicon (for Call of Duty), there were already 3 or 4 tools out for it but I felt the community could have a better one. It ended up being used by over 200 communities to manage over 1000 servers accross the world and is still used today. I build tools for fun and not for the fame or glory. I see gaps in tools and I fill those gaps. I accept donations, of course, but I never expect to charge for my tools not do I want to.
Finally, ARMACon will have a full RESTful API that will allow people to use it however they see fit as well, which will give communities the ability to uild them into their admin tools as well as iOS and Android controllers to be made (if I don't build them myself).
which is <my nickname> @ bistudio.com
The biggest point is that you have to "babysit" the protocol. You ask for a ban list, and recieve a player list instead and vice versa. My goal in my post, wasn't to bash BE (although, admittedly, that is what it looks like :) ).
My goal was merely to say that these tools, while they do work, are not NEARLY as full featured as an RCON tool for ARMA 2/3 should/could be. Additionally, since they cache the banlists, if you have more than one person using the tool at the same time, unbans/bans can be lifted accidentally if people don't refresh because BE doesn't alert you that the list has changed. While I admit that the admin should refresh before they take any action, we need to make it as easy as we can on ARMA server admins as it is one of the most difficult servers to manage.
We have run the #1 servers in the world for CoD BO, BFBC2, BF3, and some of the top for BF4 and ARMA is by far the most demanding on our staff. That is why I Started this tool (and the same reason I did Paronicon). Sure, there are tools that can do RCON for it, but none that are as full featured as they could be and none that make it easy for a large community to manage and most importantly, none that can auto-manage multiple servers from one instance and from within game.
Finally, everyone that uses these toosl has to have full control and needs the RCON password, instead of having permissions, layers, and tiers of members....
PS: Thanks for taking the time to read the posts and have a conversation about them. It's refreshing to see you take in interest in what people are talking about. I never get anything accomplished when I go through the tracker for bugs and server issues.....
because then we can fix or improve it
If you've done it correctly sending a players command should return the players list not the banslist. Same goes with sending the loadbans command, doing so should return a banslist not a players list.
As for the other rcons, how do you think they are "lacking" in features?
They don't have any..... They just watch the server and provide no administration options other then managing players. I can do that with anything.....
We are looking for a tool that will log chat, log rcon, log players, allow for in-game administration, multiple servers, managing one server from within another without leaving the game, differing levels of management so that not everyone has to have the RCON password to admin the server (some will have kick, some will have ban, some can restart the mission, ect....), API to allow for web based application to be built (or android and iOS), map management, filter management, log management, mission management, mods, and so much more. I mean there are so many pieces to an ARMA server. Why are people afraid of a more sophisticated alternative? Why can't we have ones as powerful as Paronicon for CoD, ProCon for BF, and just about any other server type in existence.....
I'm not forcing anyone to use my tool. Nor am I saying that the other tools don't do their job, because they do. There are just a TON more features that and ARMA RCON tool could have. :)
As for the protocol returning invalid requests, I'll try to set up a test as soon as I can, but as you can see from the date I posted this originally, this is not my main project ATM.
The bit that gets me is that you're listing features that most of the above rcons already have, its like you've failed to even open up any of the rcons that Dwarden mentioned in his posts.
I'll give you that a neat idea is the permission system and thats something that should be added in like procon.
if you take my rcon as an example it does log chat, log rcon, logs players into a local datebase and a remote mysql database. that players can set up. It also has a global database that all rcons feed into to log players on a massive scale. Has a notification system that hooks into teamspeak. I have an unreleased version that you can maange multiple servers from within the single client.
It seems some of the things you've stated are included into multple tools rather than one single tool that ♥♥♥♥♥ on the server. What you want is something like the ProCon layer server that sits on the same box as the server and the other clients connect to. It has a permission system and can control all aspects of the server and a nice web ui so any client can connect to it be it windows, linux, andriod or ios.
We have operated the number 2 Altis Life server as well as several over KOTH/Infantry servers that were in the 20's-30's in the Unites States on ARMA all the while using these tools that were mentioned (and custom web UIs for permissions reasons), so I am VERY familiar with them and what they do and how they do it. How am I (or anyone) supposed to know what you have in an unrealeased version. I'm glad to hear that multiple server support will be in it.
ARMACon is obviously going to work best if it's on the same server as the instances, but it's not required and it doesn't do any damage to the server at all since it's getting the information through FTP, and not battleye. I'm fully aware (again, having built plugins for ProCon and building a tool for CoD), that BE is VERY different from them. That doesn't mean that a tool can't have every feature I listed above and more. You just have to be creative.
We used EPM for the most part when direct RCON had to be used because it seems more stable (not sure which one is yours). Also, as I said, those tools do their job just fine, but we could be leveraging so much more. That's all I'm saying.
Are you not open to better tools? Are you not open to continuously improving what options are out there? I for one feel that NOTHING is EVER perfect and can always be improved upon. That's what I'm trying to do. If I fail, so what. I'm just trying because I <personally> think things can be done better to make an admins life easier. I have several communites that are asking me regularly for the tool so that they can use it because they have seen it in action (we used an early alpha build to manage our servers for GSN).
Besides, at the rate I'm going, I may never actually finish the damn thing. It's not high on my priority list being a free-lance developer and all I have to put my paid gigs first (as I'm sure you understand).
I'm not trying to dis you or your tool. They all serve their purpose, but do you really need to hate on someone that is trying to make a great tool for the community for free, just like you did? I just do this for fun, learning, and trying to help any admin in any way that I can....
If you need testers, the 160th JSFAR servers can be used for it!
In many ways, I had to halt it, yes. Largely due to me going away from the ARMA world due to real life issues. I would LOVE to get back into it, and I hope to some day soon. There is still a lack of fully helpful and integrated tools for ARMA administration. I have been recently been starting to get the itch to work on it again, so it may be sonner rather than later. Finally.....
