At first you don't notice or don't care, because you think maybe they only sell weed and dont realize they sell meth instead. Now before you know it the neighborhood gets overrun by meth heads to the point that they start to spill over into your neighborhood. So in a very short time your property starts to lose value, and now you have to lock up your house and sleep with a gun. Yeah you can keep your house in order, but as soon as you peak out the window you see a once beautiful neighborhood filled with wrecked cars, drive bys, and graffiti. You can't even leave your home without risk, and you struggle to make new friends because you don't know which ones are the meth heads.
Now imagine that in order to expand their business, the dealers decide to start selling crack, and you will see why many people hate wasteland.
Some are pissed because such mods did draw attention to players who actually dont care about the game itself as a military sim and rather about a certain mod(s).
Other players are probably pissed because certain mods did attract players who are very different to the Arma community. Massive hacks did show up, less teamplay and coordination and often none mature behaviour without respect to other players, players with FPS shooter gameplay mentality and player from a different genre who dont know about the Arma community which exist since Operation Flashpoint more than ten years ago with a an average higher age than in regular FPS shooters.
Some of the mentioned mods are actually also exactly the opposite of what the Arma community was always proud of, good teamplay and quality gameplay with coordination. Wasteland and DayZ are actually offering an antisocial game where not teamplay is important but only the ego and loot like in mmorpgs. This could be another reason.
There are probably more reasons and it is aswell individuel if someone has an issue with such a modification or the changes in the last months with Arma.
You have a pet cat, the cat goes outside from time to time and one day it brings you back a mouse. Now we have both given each other mindless hypothetical stories. That was kinda fun wasn't it? I'm not failing to see what you are trying to say, but the idea of not playing game modes you don't like and playing the one you do not only applys, but still solves the problem
It was fun, and the whole point of the analogy was to show why ignoring the game modes doesn't work for some people. Essentially they feel these game modes are an insult to something they love and feel its being devalued.
What he is getting at is both dayz/wasteland seem to breed a group of players that when they get angry about mommy not buying them ice cream, they take it out on players trying to enjoy themselves. No this isn't dayz/wasteland players in general, but the group that get jollies from trolling/scripting/being annoying, and the amount of these players have increased in numbers do to dayz/wasteland.
I usually do, but I personally don't have a problem with wasteland or dayz. If I have any gripe, its that they pull players away from more enjoyable game modes like warfare for example. In my experience a lot of dayz/wasteland players fail to realize that there is a game outside of these modes, and often times other game modes do what they enjoy about day/wasteland better. I will admit wasteland could be interesting on altis, couldn't stand it on stratis.
If you played wasteland on Chenarus or Takistan you'll understand exactly why it's bad on Stratis. Stratis is just too small, too little space for that many people in a gamemode all about exploring and surviving. The whole draw of wasteland, at least for me and my friends, is that for the most part it's a pretty calm game, collecting weapons and searching for water and food. And then you get the super tense and exhilarating moments when you run across an enemy player. Wasteland is all about the highs and the lows, where warfare and domination are just a solid stream of fighting. At least that's my opinion.
