I created these missions and they are fully explained so you will not get lost!
Always, if it is possible, play Arma with colleagues!
Have fun and welcome to Arma!

All those maps/mods where you have to find your way around and not seeing anyone for a long time, can be quite overwhelming for a new player. That would mainly be Capture the Island and Wasteland ;)
But yeah... Play DM or TDM till you can tell BLUFOR from OPFOR and got a good idea of where what is.
And you need guides:

Exactly the site I was thinking of... despite my spelling error :)
If your completely new to the editor you can find all the information your ever need just by looking for guides on Google & youtube, its not as hard as you might think to play with the editor.
In short you could create your own training missions to home your skills on what ever aspect you feel you might need help with, start with the AI skill level low and then increase it once your feel your ready.

That's not an issue on your end. It's a well-known issue on the multiplayer-side of things. It's a combination of ('poor') engine/server-hardware/mission-design.
