Arma 3

3rd Person or 1st
Which do you prefer?

Third person allows players to see around corners without worry, making attacking suicide. It effectively removes the need for communication in localized areas, the effects of covering fire, reliance on sound, and the need for stealth when scouting.

First person, on the other hand, does not allow players to see their bum shake back and forth.

1st person is of course more realistic. Given Arma 3 is a simulation, 3rd person viewing is a little like having an "easier" setting.

In arma games I always play in 1st person when I am shooting or aiming. But I enjoy 3rd person if I am running long ways or sometimes inside buildings.

I was more talking about whether or not you prefer 3rd person to be enabled on a server

I think third person was incorprated because in reality, You are so much more aware of your surroundings. You can hear better, look faster, and do things that the game game just doesnt allow. Because of all that, the 3rd person perspective is there when you need it.

Well, I like both of 'em really, but I still miss the hardcore servers where piloting choppers on FPV was hard.

True... But, seeing enemies that are out of your line of sight is possible too.

Third person is used almost exclusively for stalking someone from behind a wall until you are in a good position to kill them. I have done it and I have had people do it to me several times. Things would be quite different if they had to poke their head out to keep track of my position.

Only time I use 3rd person is when I am driving.

I like that servers have the option.
Server has the option and then the user decides if he stays and what he uses.

This isn't true.

This is my post from a different discussion on steam hub I'm sure it fits once again

Ahh... This discussion again.

Funny thing about this, 3rd person is just as realistic as 1st person.
I'm sure you will disagree which is fine. People have different opinions but just hear me out.

First, I can see why you have a problem with it. People can look over walls and objects and I do agree that is unrealistic but honestly that is the only problem with it. 3rd person isn't anymore unrealistic than 1st person.

Why do I think 3rd person isn't less realistic than 1st person? Well the only thing that is more realistic about 1st person is the 1st person perspective. Well that might be your whole point but think about your body in real life and the situation awareness that 3rd person gives you and 1st person doesn't. 3rd person gives you the perspective of your individual body. It lets you know your stance and current status of yourself. 3rd person just adds so much more awareness and body senses than 1st person could ever do. While looking over stuff can be a problem I wouldn't just dismiss 3rd person as being unrealistic.

3rd person cam isn't always a better cam to use. I use both 3rd person and 1st person. 1st person is great for when you're in tree/bush areas. Playing 3rd person in a tree/bush area can give you a huge disadvantage because the trees/bushes can get in the way of your view easily where 1st person isn't as bad. I find 1st person a better cam to use most the time while I'm playing. I mostly use 3rd person when i'm running around to get a better sense of my area but I use 1st person when I'm in combat or trying to find someone.

There is also a video somewhere about the Arma devs talking about this and they feel basicly the same way I do.
3rd person isn't unrealistic. If anything 3rd person is more realistic. Just because you have a 1st person view doesn't make it more realistic.

I do agree that there should be a stance monitor somewhere on your screen when you are in first person. Other than that, the dramatic change in gameplay when using third person simply is not worth it in my opinion. It undermines everything the game aims for. Not realism, but communication, tactics, strategy.

A well organized group raiding a building will lose every time to a group or even a single person using third person to corner peek.

Well they are adding a stance indicator :) Actully I think it came in with the 6.0 patch.
What you said is probably the best/smartest counterargument to what I have said. :D
but in the end it is server side and I love having both. Choice of the server and then the user.
I love the amount of opitions in Arma 3.

Yep... you made a good oint or two Gi_Conti
I never mind getting a good counter discussion to think about!

You see above walls, hills, corners, without risking yourself. whats unrealistic about it? Was it unrealistic on Tomb Raider and Mario 64?

ArmA players are too used to it to admit otherwise, saying third person is completely unrealistic will only gather an angry mob.

i play both and i agree with u all i just love the game give me 1st or 3rd give me 5th and 6th person view i dont mind

Angry mobs are bad.
But, what is important is the fact that people enjoy playing the game anyway, why people can't accept others preferences is now the issue here,
Second, every view has it advantage. If you are really an Arma fan, things like 3rd Person or 1st person, wouldn't bother anyway, since, they are a in-game feature for years...

you can achieve the same awarness if you you use free look in first person. Looking over walls in 3rd person is immersion breaking for me. I wish more severs would lock first person.
