Bad terrain rendering and cheating AI?
Hello,

Arma 2 looked really cool at the time and I bought it a couple of years ago only to be very disappointed by the bugs that were never fixed. I stopped playing for 2 reasons:

1) The vegetation what rendered in a circle around the player. If someone wanted to stay away in the mountains to snipe/observe, thinking he was hidden by the vegetation, the enemy could simply look at the mountain and since it was far, the vegetation wouldn't render and the lone sniper would be a visible black form on the ground, like a Christmas tree in the dark, making impossible infiltration tactics against competent players.

2) The omniscient cheating AI. When I was trying to infiltrate an enemy base of AI and I was far on a border of the base, if I shot an enemy or in the air, every AI on the map would know where I was and would start shooting at my exact position, even when hidden in vegetation or in forest or behind a low wall.

These two game breaking bugs combined with the really bugged movements and incredibly amateur menus and interface made me hate the game. I know Arma 3 is only an alpha but so far do you see these problems occurring?

Don't hide behind vegetation. Find a large rock. They don't go away.

Damn. Now let's hope they'll fix that for the real game.

Seems like *you* failed at reading.

I shared your problems with this in Arma and in Arma 2 as well but I found instead of using grass to hide best spots were usually bushes, rocks, trees and other substances of cover.

So far the bushes are just great it truely allows you to utilize them to great effect in arma 3 by allowing you to really get under those leaves and such. On thing is I play with low terrain simply because its a huge drain on performance, the grass is a big hit. Putting it on low brings between a 15%-25% fps increase.

The grass is one of the reason this game looks good so I couldn't turn it off.

1st grass not rendering at extreme distances is a common issue for all games, just take out grass and use rocks, bushes and trees for cover.

As for the AI you are doing it wrong, firts the AI cant see thru walls, rocks bushes or trees and if you are using a silenced weapon they won't know what is hitting them, even shooting at ranges of 800m or more with unsilenced wepons also helps to conceal your position, at least the first shoot, but dont stay in the same spot for long cause after the first shot hits the AI will start looking for you and as soon as one of the AI finds you he instantly comunicates your position to all nearby AI soldiers

So did they fix this since I asked?

Ok commincation between the AI can be set on or off so that the enemy can communicate with one another via RADIO of enemies in the vicinity (only set in mission editor). This is realistic is it not having it on ? we coordinate attacks and defence via communication (players) why cant the AI its common sense. Secondly the difficulty can be adjusted so there is no excuse and coordinating attacks with other players would save you from being killed or having to respawn if allowed. The fact is if you are killed you can be healed in most servers with the btc revive script so theres no problem if coop play was being ultised.

This is not a bug but a blatent feature of realism which quiet frankly is above your understanding and skill if you can not comprehend this, as you have clearly stated again if it has been fixed, (what a joke).

Also i agree with the first point to a certain extent !. On multiplayer draw distance can be set for every player and every ai unit so thats entirely the mission developers fault or if official missions Bohemias fault. Also players canot possiblly alter the draw distance any higher than the mission editor / server allows if implemented which should (MISSION DEVELOPERS TAKE NOTE). I for one implement every possible feature to make it as fair as possible and even test every single scenario to stop people from moaning and not appreciating the time and effort gone into such mission / servers.

The only problem is the highest settings are to much for most computers to handle and may give some players an advantage only solution turn the draw distance for everyone on the server down to optimal performance. IF your computer cant handle it at optimal performance then leave the server problem solves this is the only viable solution of fairness on multiplayer. We will not drop the performance to medium / low settings just so some players can play on our multiplayer servers that is the users fault for not improving their system.

Do you think its our job to make sure players get the best experience no its not but good mission editors / servers will utlise the best possible features and contingency plans if all fails and do i see one bit of gratatude no i dont. We are gamers like yourself we dont NEED to do anything. you play on our servers which we either rent or or pay, build and mantain so other players can benefit (most likely a better computer than most just to host matches, i for one use a i7 3770K 8GB ram for my own server! with 100MB connection).

Secondly communication and tactical gameplay is the priority in this game and the AI utlisies this no differently than any human player. The fact is you must adapt your gameplays style to accomodate these threats just like in real life. Of course the mission editor can alter the ai difficulty specificly such as alter can they communicate with one another, distance detection, shooting and accuracy abiity etc etc.

I'm happy to see you say they did something for the AI. I understand that they can communicate if one see me and I run away or something but I'm talking about situations when it would require more than one bullet to kill an enemy and in the .05 sec it would take to kill him he would reveal my exact position too all his friends, sometimes even when killing in one hit, that's what I'm talking about.

For the vegetation, yeah I was afraid it would not be fixed. Well that's one thing we'll have to check on videos to see if it's as bad as in Arma II before buying the game.

Yeh im sure you can control the amount of time the enemy can communicate with others if enemy has been spotted im not 100% sure but it will surely be implemented in the future

Now that it's out, do you see any improvements?
Theo Hardmeier Sep 13, 2013 @ 7:14am
If an enemy sees ya you only have a second or so to cap him or his squad will know to.

Topic Concealment:

Rendering grass is an issue at every game - unless it is a shoebox like CoD, BF, etc.

In ARMA you have to learn the difference between cover and concealment. Adapt and survive.
