Lets forget for a moment about all the implications to realism that jumping would or wouldn't have and instead ask what a guy working on the game would ask:

Is this feature -necessary- ? What would being able to jump add ? How would it improve the game ?

Do you want jumping just cause all the other games have it, or would it serve some actual purpose ? I mean honestly how often have you played Arma 2 and thought: "Gee, I sure wish I could've jumped here" ?

There's plenty of times when I've played Arma that I wish I could jump just to navigate onto a small obstacle - step over is just goofy and prone to glitching you into objects in the terrain, it just adds to the overall navigation ability toolset. It would be like saying, why do you need to go prone when crouch is good enough.

But this is a "simulation" and as such won't ever be added.

I've been playing ARMA since I think the first. Never got to play OFP. But that's beside the point.

I've never had the ability to jump, never really found a need for it. As long as I can shoot and vault short walls, I'm fine.

point?

I'm not talking about bunny hopping--I'm talking about getting over/through obstacles that stepping over won't handle. If I'm missing something, please tell me, but I can't find how to climb over a chest-high obstacle--or go through an open window. That is a basic movement in real life, so it would be a shame if that was missing from Arma. I play RO2, and such vaulting is there, so I'm wondering if I'm missing that function in ArmaIII.

You get "step over" function, no vaulting as such.

you walk up to a small wall or fence and activate the step over function, your character will do a big step and "hopefully" clear the obstacle.

It's simple. Arma advertises itself as a sim. As someone with experience in small unit tactics, I'll hapilly tell you that real soldiers jump all the time. They jump over brush, into and out of low windows, over debris, onto small obstacles for better vantage points, etc.

Want a game that is getting it right?

I'm not trying to say Arma sucks - I love it. But it's simple. Removing something that is very realistic, in an attempt to make your game more realistic, is simply idiotic. Arma always should have had a jump feature. They just needed to make it realistic -- try to shoot something while jumping and you only hit the ground or the sky. Try to jump while carrying 150 lbs and you will break your ankle. Jumping makes noise, is a function that causes a lack of control on behalf of the operator, and causes movement that is easily seen by the enemy. But it is still a basic human function that real soldiers use all the time for practical purposes. Not having it is like removing your ability to look left. Sure, we can survive by just turning right 3 times, and after a while we can get used to it, but its unnatural, and makes many scenarios more cumbersome than they need to be. We keep saying we don't need it because we've gotten used to playing without it...

I'm really going to show how much of a noob (we called them newbies in my day), but here goes: How do we provide feedback to the game designers during this alpha testing? I agree with Tyrant that simple vaulting (not bunny hopping) is a basic movement that must be included in any game that claims to be realistic. I'm still learning the keys, using the Editor function to practice without anything else going on, and I can't even get over a thigh-high concrete wall without moving to where the ground rises up to its top. I am looking for something as close as possible to being a combat sim, and this would be a killer (the vault function) if it's missing in the final cut.
V button will not help you jump over from one building to another.
Just because some player suggested to implement jump function, it doesn't mean that he is a COD type of player.
He is suggesting some thing that's making this game realistic.

arma's fatigue system could easily handle any possibility of 'bunny hopping'. [tap jump, jump; tap jump again, jump 3 inches] as for why there isn't a simple jump system, i don't know. my guess is some kind of bizarre engine limitation.

Look if you guys really want it then open a ticket for it in game it is an alpha, things will change depending on users feedback.

instead of asking for jumping, OP should instead ask for a more robust vault function.

without being able to jump, the game just feel restrictive in terms of movement. I dont think anyone is looking for a stupid bunny hopping system.

COD players are smug dumbarse XBL kids who rely on sticky reticle and autoaim like consolepleb they are. Jumping is an integral element of gameplay and always has been since Quake and Counterstrike. Not to pull the PC masterrace card, but any true gamer knows that.
