Yes and we should all have a counter to count the number of dogtags collected from each player to serve as memorabilia for our efforts. Hahaha. :)
On a serious note though, if I was in a situation where I am out of ammunition and my base is being attacked, my next best option would be to scavenge my allies and fallen enemies for weapons. If that runs out, I guess I would either a) do hand to hand fighting which I'm sure I would be killed in no time b) raise the white flag and pray that the enemy recognizes the Geneva Convention. c) escape of which I should have a slim chance of performing if the base is surrounded.
AtomicShell, I agree with most if not all of your statements made regarding the use of the knife but we should not discredit the use of a knife in a given scenario where it is absolutely necessary to preserve one's own life. Perhaps the implementation of the use of a knife in this game may need some serious tweaking of which I'm fairly certain, the developers have a lot of other better things to do.
Either way, my stand is that the presence of a knife in this game is not a must have, but a good to have, just giving my 2 cents. :)
I don't know why but I laughted at the Genova thing.
But now a days we mostly don't need hand-to-hand combat.
That's why you need to have firing disciplin on a squad? Ammo is not unlimited. And so is in the army.
The knife nowadays is just for basic survival not warfare.
Yeah, they got silencers for infiltrating missions. you not gonna risk walk 50m just to kill 1 guy if you can take him ot from afar and hide the body. (I'm the only one that miss this feature?).
Glad I brought some laughter here, lol.
I think you may have misunderstood my point on ammunition shortage. I was just giving a scenario where you are being attacked and there is no spare munition lying around. ie, you made your bullets count but the human wave is still surging forward.
True, I would agree with you that the knife is used in basic survival, just saying that if I were to run out of bullets, my knife would be a better option than throwing the Geneva Convention law in their face and saying I surrender.
Yep, silencers have been given and I totally agree with your statement on the usage. But then again, firing a silenced weapon should only be a last resort to take out a threat which otherwise may escalate into a full blown alarm on the enemy camp. Then again, there's an element of realism mixed into this explanation. Why shoot when you can sneak?
Side note : Miss the body hiding feature too.
At the third and final presidential debate Monday night, Mitt Romney accused Barack Obama of reducing the number of ships in the U.S. Navy. President Obama responded, “Well, governor, we also have fewer horses and bayonets.” Does the U.S. military still use bayonets much?
Yes. All Marines learn to use bayonets during their basic martial arts training. Some of this training takes place on the Bayonet Assault Course, upon which Marines are unleashed to bayonet everything in sight. Learning proficiency in basic bayoneting techniques is part of qualifying for a tan belt, which is required of every recruit. Marines are expected to learn to attach and remove the bayonets from their rifles quickly, so that they might swiftly initiate a charge.
While the bayonet dates to the 17th century, it has evolved through technological innovations over the years. In 2003, the Marine Corps replaced its standard-issue bayonet with a longer, sharper model, the OKC-3S. The new model, designed by New York’s Ontario Knife Co., was also more effective when brandished as a hand knife—not to mention more ergonomically correct. Perhaps more vitally, the blades were also better able to pierce body armor, a concern particular to modern warriors. More than 120,000 bayonets were commissioned to supply one to each Marine, at an estimated price of $36.35 each, or $4,362,000 total. In addition to potential use in hand-to-hand combat, bayonets are said to be useful for keeping prisoners under control and for “poking an enemy to see whether he is dead.”
But then i read this
The Marines aren’t the only branch of the military to equip its soldiers with bayonets. The Army issues the M9 bayonet knife, which has been in use since the 1980s, but troops have moved away from the detachable knives in recent years. In 2010, the Army began to scale back on bayonet drills in favor of calisthenics, perhaps a wise move given that the soldiers rarely carry bayonets on their rifles, and since the last U.S. bayonet charge was in 1951. Others, however, have still found use for the bayonet charge in recent years. Just last month a British soldier was honored for a bayonet charge on the Taliban that he led in 2011. This charge was reminiscent of another British bayonet charge in Basra, Iraq, in 2004. In 2011, Col. Muammar Gaddafi was also reportedly killed by a bayonet stab to the rear.
so hum i guess that the only crazy mofos that still use bayonete charges are the crazy english guys lol

check all the diferent knifes that are still used
ps : for guys talking about a more arcade system gameplay because of the knifes FU buddys
It's just useless because of the way Arma works, and yeah, they issue bayonets, but all they get used for is cutting open MREs and chopping up ice.
And stabbing wild boar too, don't forget the boars, lol.
Yea, until they can come up with a good system to implement knives in ArmA3, I highly doubt the effectiveness of it in ArmA3.
soldiers have and are trained with knives so why not? close quarters combat do exist even if they are rare.
Hmm... From what I recall, there are also CQC weapons such as pistols, SMGs, Shotguns...
Frying pans... (ignore the last one).
You forgot to metion he's got like 600m to 50m and 30/20 bullets and he's team mates and 100 shoots per minute to kill you.
And my next question is this. "You are out of ammo and a enemy Ifrit is after you what do you do?
A) Rage on forums?
B)Go rushing with your might M9 knife with the poor 20cm blade reach, against the HMG on ifrit with almost 1km reach?
C) Asks for fire support?
D)Dies!
E) Remember if you sticked with your squad, you would have someone with extra mags that could lend you some, and problably 1 or 2 AT soldiers to support you, instead of crying for mercy.
Most Arma players should know this answer! If you answer it wrongly oh dear god! Forgive me!
I have decided that I will rage the enemy Ifrit to death with my well structured sentence on the forums hoping to put him through the wall of shame. Then I will curl up and sob non stop that my knife did not blow up the Ifrit's engine.
Therefore, I seek your forgiveness friend.
On another note, well, let's just see what the developers have decided on the inclusion of knives in this simulator.
