Customization of your gear usually happens when you enter a multiplayer game near your spawn point. In certain games like wasteland, you have to scavenge for gear by wandering around the map. In the singleplayer show case, you would probably have to find weapons cache to swap out your current weapon or find one off a dead enemy unit.
If you're referring to character face and cosmetic items, you can edit your parameters via the Profile button when you start up the game.
you can download the mission that is built around the script, gear up the character, copy the code into the clipboard and place it in the unit's init field while mission making.
