Mortar Strike in Campaign...??
In the campaign there is a mortar mission where you have to down some guard towers. Does anyone know how to call those in accurately...is there something I'm missing? I keep calling in shots either by pointing with my bino's or using the map where the x is right on the tower and the rounds fall all over the place. Is there some trick to this?

This was answered by DEV Dwarden in another thread and he said that it is actual mortars coming down so there is error unlike in ARMA2 where it was point and thats where the magic would happen.

I asked this same question. Another steam user called Chortles provided me with this from BI:

The problem lies in the conflict between sandbox and playable content. The mortar in Radio Silence mission is an actual mortar with each round having simulated ballistics, the exact same as you would get if you placed it in the Editor using the Supports system, because that's exactly what it's using. Admittedly, the mission flow was designed when mortars were much more accurate by default, hence why you're having to take out specific towers.

However, in response to user feedback, the accuracy of sandbox mortars was lowered, which makes sense when you think about it. Before, you'd order a salvo of 8 rounds in sandbox, and each round would land pretty much exactly where you ordered it. Unfortunately, this change also impacted this mission. As a direct result, we changed the mission so that, although the task fails, the mission still continues. We saw this as a solution for now (although I do still manage fairly regularly to take out each tower, myself  ) while we look at if, and how, we can properly solve the issue. Rest assured, we're not ignoring it.

this is stupid.. i hated that mission. I kept thinking i just sucked at it. Its a game. I want to blow stuff up not have 'realistic' morters that never hit the mark....

bohemia are just idiots in my mind atm

Razdek, Arma 3 is not designed as a game, its designed to be a combat sim which means it that they will try to get as close to the real thing as posible.

Idiots trying to simulate actual ballistics?

Dont you have anything sensible to say?

So the mortar from the campaign is an actual unit on the map firing a mortar round, and not the "virtual" mortar unit? I disagree as to whether that should have an effect on mortar accuracy as much as it does. It obviously isn't a perfect weapon, but sometimes the mortars(both fired by your team, and the AI firing at you at the end) is just nuts for aiming.
I looked at where I aimed, watched where the mortar hit, then adjusted so it would land in the general area of the tower, Ive tested it several times and got all the towers 5 out of 7 attempts

LMAO, I laid down some mortar fire using the MAP marker, bang on the button of the right hand side tower going into the base. When I checked my map again the marker had changed and was right on me so I had to do a runner, I would have told my squad mate laying under the bush to move too but I couldn't so it didn't end well for him :)
I ended up marking on the right hand tower and shelling all 8 mortars in one go, I did kill the bloke standing next to the big shed though, lol

Yeah, this is pretty much the most annoying segment of the campaign as of yet.

I missed the towers but managed to take out all the vehicles, smaller structures, and kill a large number of the enemies. I failed the task but was happy with the results. I'm glad they reduced the accuracy. Before, all you had to do was point at something and it would explode 15 seconds later. That's a little too much. I find that calling clusters of 3 shells help. Don't aim right on top of the target but ~10m from it.

If you have a morter you should be able to have an option to adjust fire 1-5 clicks of windage and 1-5 clicks elevation and then once its on, have an option to fire for effect. The inaccuracy is stupid.

You do know few people if anyone can sight a motor properly. The reason its done simple is for simplistic sake. Also you need to have last i checked 3 guys to man a motor, one ot sight it, the other to drop the shell in and the third guy adjusting it from the sighting instrcutions given to him by the first guy.

Also the motor is quite accurate if you have someone relaying how close each shot lands to the previous. Artillery do it that way "Bring it back 200"

i executed the mortar team for treason after they failed to even hit the camp

As far as the "user feedback" that the campaign dev cited as the reason for the nerf (presumably not his idea)... blame this[feedback.arma3.com].

I tried 8 Mortars on one tower and they all fell around the tower
I replayed that Mission countless times and it became evident that it
was impossible to complete that task.

I the the end I chose too storm it and it worked for me,which is just dumb -
because Arma 3 is supposed to be a tactical shooter.

See what Cyrus9mm and I both said... blame the feedback ticket (at my link) for the mortars getting nerfed, and as AegisXIII wondered, the mortars in that mission are indeed "an actual unit on the map firing a mortar round" and therefore affected by that change.
