Need help understanding why the new .338 rifle is not a sniper rifle
Hi

I grabbed the new DLC. I was trying to work on updating my LRPS guide when I noticed that the new 9.3mm, 12.7x54mm and .338 rifles are classified as marksmen rifles and not sniper rifles. This surprised me, considering the classification of their real-life inspirations.

After some research I found out that:

  • The 12.7x54mm Kir is inspired by the VSS and the VKS, which have accuracies of 3 and 1 MOA and effective ranges of 400m and 600m respectively. This explains the classification of the Kir as marksman rifle.
  • The 9.3mm cyrus is inspired by the SVDK (effective range 600m, about 2 MOA) and Saiga (effective range 500m, about 3.2 MOA). Again, this explains the classification as a marksman rifle.
  • The .338 Mar-10 is inspired by the Noreen "Bad News" sniper rifle. This sniper rifle reportedly boasts sub-MOA accuracy, and has an effective firing range above 1500m. So why is this last one classified as a marksman rifle?

Even in-game, the Mar-10 performs much worse than one would expect, given the characteristics of its inspiration rifle. Not only does it fire the .338 Lapua Magnum, the round currently holding the world record for longest range sniper kill, it is supposedly based on a rifle able to dispense said round with sub-MOA accuracy.

I expected the Mar-10 to be a slightly weaker M320, but it is classified and behaves like a marksman rifle (even the accuracy is much lower than I expected).

Can someone help me understand why? My knowledge of weapons is purely theoretical.

You shouldn't expect too much from a semiautomatic rifle even if it fires such a powerful round. 1500 meters is quite impressive for that setup but there's a reason armies around the world use bolt-action snipers.

Makes sense, thanks!
