ARMA 3 Online is kinda rough
It seems almost impossible to find a decent batch of people to play with, or a server that doesn't require dozens of mods that only have a few players on. Then when I join in, it's mostly salty wannabe weekend warriors not wanting to help a new player (to online, plenty of hours making single-player scenarios) by attacking or vote kicking me out of a server. I think I'll stick to making single-player scenarios, cause most of the players are just kinda sad; yes, it's a mil-sim, no, it doesn't mean I wanna pretend to care about your wasted time spent towards earning a rank you placed in your gamer tag. I think many get upset because I'm an online noob, yet keep the momentum going stronger than the "seasoned" players that spot everything with binoculars and try to snipe everyone, fuss about using the in-game vehicles (if you don't want someone using vehicles, don't have vehicles), and generally make the experience tedious and generally not fun: I know how to go to the local recruiter's office and mess-up by signing up. I just want to play a game (not real life, lol) online with other people, not boost a gravy seal's ego because they were too L.E.G. (No, I never served, but have a host of relatives that did, and they think ya'll are just silly after I explain how "serious" people take a game.) There's no restart in real-life (*unless you ascribe to reincarnation, but even then, no proof yet-not hate, just a fact, all religions are based on faith), but there is in ARMA 3. Take a chill pill and reprioritize what you hold important in life. Anyone that got this far, good on ya, most have already typed and submitted their vitriol I imagine, but maybe you know of a chill place to have fun while playing that isn't Vanilla ARMA 3.

77thJSOC (their public server) is pretty chill last I checked. And yes there are some public servers ran by Arma 3 Units, that are relatively populated and chill as well. Anything made by BI (Anything with a Region Tag such as EU or US, as well as the word Official) is pure toxicity.

whatever invade and annex server you can find that populated is your best chance.. also try escape servers if you can find populated ones of those too

Public servers in my opinion are awful. I recommend private milsim groups who are passionate about what they create. They are usually very friendly to new players

OP literally stated he doesn't want Milsim. So a Unit is out of the question.

77 JSOC has a nice balance of players. It depends who you get as a squad leader. Some of them are really serious while others can be hilarious and make the game so much more fun. I guess it depends when you play and who with.

Unfortunately you have started playing 11 years after release the game is not as popular as it once was. There is still an active community of 10000 players which is amazing for its age.

Its kinda weird right now. I still enjoy online but I gotta turn the Voip off 95% of the time. If i'm on a server that I can't even see the enemy I usually dip

bro im literally the same way. I literally only play this game because of the single player scenarios and i like to make my own scenarios even if my editor skills are kinda trash. I play this game becasue of the ai and the game runs amazing on my basic gaming laptop.

Thanks for the tips everyone, I'll check out the server and suggested match types! -If anyone is down for sharing single player scenarios, I'm down (mine aren't the fanciest either, but they're still fun). -It's not that I'm against MilSim, but I feel most that were "over the top" I ran into were never in the military (as I wasn't), so it didn't seem like MilSim, it was like "Mil-What-Movies-Seem-Like-Sim". I make this claim based on my brother and father (both Army Vets that unfortunately experienced combat) comments after I shared stories of other players getting emotional (angry/rude). -Anecdote: My father had a DI that volunteered for 3 tours of Nam, and as he imparted to my father's troop going through Basic, he may yell and cuss to motivate them, but when the bullets start flying, and they will, he wanted them to be as emotionless as possible; simply reacting to the danger and doing as trained to survive. I share this for those that get all emotional and wish to engage in MilSim: emotions get you killed, especially anger more than fear. (I wonder why I'm single....? ; ) As another pointed out, this game is over 11 years old, why turn-off or away new players that can keep the party going?

Nonsense, not every unit is hardcore Milsim. There are loads of groups that run more casual gameplay and servers.

That's why 77th JSOC is perfect for the casual player to dip their toes into. The EU1 server is busy 24/7 and has helpful people that will gladly teach the basics. If the OP does get a taste for MILSIM they have a private side, which they use the public server to recruit from.

77th JSOC is for those with a little bit of experience with ARMA and wanting a bit more 'realism' imo. The usual 'ARMAed' situations are there such as magic mortars. It's a bit tougher and you can't just lone wolf it or you will eventually get kicked. SquadLead may be harsh or relaxed but you should ALWAYS support the squad. Some SL run through the mission into mass cas situations but whatever. You may have to wait at base to join a team so have patience. There are many regulars and you'll get to know the crowd. It doesn't use tank/vehicles much and pilots mostly have to be vetted.
-EU1 Altis usually has players 24/7
-EU2 Tanoa requires the DLC. After dinner time EST USA the group usually leaves en mass.
-EU3 Livinois also requires the DLC. It's new and also excellent but still sparse.
New players are always welcome. It's one of the better ones which I play on a regular basis.

55th is relaxed but occasionally semi organized. Good server and missions.

Bad Company can be total chaos with idiot TK'ers but occasionally people form groups and get things done well. Pilot transporters can be excellent or non-existent. Usually more of an individual choice experience.

OP you throw around a lot of emotional accusations at randoms playing Arma. Regardless KOTH or Warlords are really good no mods pvp, or you can just join any invade and annex servers. For vanilla they get you right to the shooting bit and nobody cares about milsim. Do the campaign first if you don't understand how to use the game. There are plenty of casual discord servers you can find through youtube if you want scheduled sessions. Vanilla is much rarer now as far as I know. The best part about killing players sweating and abusing the game to see you first is that you can see them first by implementing milsim. However there are plenty of 20+ person populated vanilla servers that exist. Maybe you don't know how to use the server browser.

Not all units are milsim genius. I would argue half of the groups are nowhere near milsim

Hey, straight to point. We play in EU times on Fridays and Saturdays generally. Server is up 24/7, so hosting on workdays is possible.
We have no specific faction, so Zeuses can make mission where we play as anyone against anything. Once you join you can attend missions immediately. There are trainings, but they are for "dibs" (someone who is a pilot trained, can pick pilot role before others).
We are not serious milsim, I would describe us as Semi-Serious. You can joke all you want, but when bullets start flying, cut the crap, until they stop.
We are pretty new, so we don't have a lot of attendance yet. Small unit tactics it is than.

Haha, my post wasn't emotional, just sharing my experiences base on a handful of servers that weren't password or vanilla. Yes, I know how to use server browser, but tend to run into snarky people like yourself that don't contribute, and just make yourself seem like an ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥. I don't want to waste my time looking through Discord or YouTube, when Steam has this nifty thing called "Community Discussion" for games where people can get answers. People like you on Steam that only add negativity disguised as a suggestion make Steam Online kinda rough, you should try interacting with people in person more often instead of online, it helps to build positive character as their is no keyboard or distance to bark behind. Have a good one.
