how to play multiplayer with a friend?
This might be stupidly obvious but i cannot figure it out. I am trying to play with a friend, and only him, so that he can learn the game. But i cant find out how to invite him to a game i make, and he cant use steams "join game" option under friends. What am i doing wrong?

In the multiplayer server browser (in the actual game) he can search for whatever you have named the session when you started hosting. He just has to click on filter and type in the name to find it. Probably best to have a password too.

Use hamachi to create a lan game and you can create a server that your friends can join over the internet.I had trouble with the port forwarding it would work some times and others it would not.Google hamachi tutorial on youtube if you dont know how to use it

If he isn't able to find you on the serverbrowser, this is the other way:

1 - Create a game and make sure you pick Internet over Lan
2 - Invite your friend through the steam interface, it will fail, but it should also pop up a widow for him telling "server not responding" with the IP of your game and other info.
3 - In the multiplayer screen, bottom right should be a button called "Remote", go in there
4 - Paste in there the IP of the game and the port, that uses to be 2302 by default, and then it should connect.

Just had the same problem and got it solved this way not even a day ago.

another way to do it just using the broswer for now where it says STEAM next to INTERNET in the top left, switch to GAMESPY, then host like you normally do make sure it's on internet and so forth. Hopefully, you can do this through steam soon since gamespy is going offline :/

Try Hamachi, and LAN, it might work for you.

Just arrange with your friend to join any ready-made server at a certain time, then you can both do your own thing in there without anybody trying to boss you about; I reccomend any of the KOTH non-HC servers..:)

Well, none of the suggestions here are working. My friend kinda just gave up. Any ideas?

I made this post in 2014 when you had to use hamachi but you can use steam to connect now when making a server

have you checked your fire wall, i had a similar issue not to long ago and it was because one thing was not checked on my fire wall. In Windows Defender Firewall under the Allow an app or feature through Windows Defender Firewall there should be three Arma 3 names. the names are identical. assuming your problem is the same as mine, one of the Arma 3 should have its box to the left unticked. there should be an Arma 3 with public and private ticked, an Arma 3 with only private ticked and then an Arma 3 with only public ticked. if i remember correctly, the Arma 3 that had public only ticked had itself an unticked box to the left of the name. checking that should allow you hosted servers to be found by your friends.

apologies if this is hard to follow, but i assume it should make sense once you see it.

You're suppose to do the dev's jobs for them. You see, a true patrician gamer hates games with competent multiplayer implementation. Only scrubs buy games with the intention of enjoying themselves. There's always single player, which is also janky as all hell.
If you want to host an online session without using a LAN simulator or VPN such as Hamachi then you will need to port forward.

Here's a guide: https://portforward.com/arma-3/

There are official servers you can play on to this day. This game is just dated and takes extra work to play the way you want to play such as with mods. If you aren't enjoying the game then go play something else. Anyone who's been around a while knows there's a lot more to Arma than most games that come out nowadays.
