Arma 3

A-164 Wipeout doesn't feel BEAST enough
Is it just me or the 30mm cannon from the Wipeout looks like it shoots candy and flowers at the enemies. I mean it should cut through armour like a hot knife cuts through butter and sometimes it gets a hard time trying to kill infantry...

The bullets should also penetrate buildings... Right now you are pretty much safe inside a building during a strafe run...

Cheers :FIA:

You sir are right

Apparently the Wipeout only uses HE rounds which will not do much to armor. The real problem is the fact that Arma aircraft cannot hold more than one type of gun ammo, so you can't change from AP to HE. They basically chose HE and foresook the Anti-Armor qualities of the gun.

Game balance, if it could do as you say in game it would be a I win button pretty much.

Game balance...

"Balance" shouldn't even exist in Arma's dictionary... Things should be realistic. I believe balance is managed by the players good/common sense.

You have AG missles for dealing with armor, HE cannon rounds are more for soft(er) targets I think. I have no problem taking out infantry, jets and normal vehicles with it. The HE rounds will also destroy a building if you put enough rounds in it.

@ D_wolf: What B00tsy and P*Funk [ESG] said -- due to the engine's limitations on magazine ammo*, BI chose to represent an all-HE magazine instead of an all-AP magazine, so you've got a better shot (pun not intended) with other weapons such as the Macer AGM, the Shrieker AP rockets, and the GBU-12 LGBs.

* That is to say, a combined AP/HE combination is not possible for the gun magazine; tracers are an exception in the config but they don't seem to have any ballistics difference.

Real aircraft can't change ammo types mid-flight, they usually just load them up with a combined loadout of whatever ammo they are using, like half-AP half-HE, which I don't think is possible with the engine right now, but would be nice if they added it in

The server or the campange can enable or disable for ther own when they think it wouldn't be balanced.

I wouldn't say that the 30mm cannon would shred armor to pieces, but I'm all for harassing/damaging it. :)

If that was the case in real life, tanks would ditch thier 120mm cannons for 30mm autocannons if they could penetrate enemy tanks easily. (Try fitting a GAU-8 in the turret, sure you can, but where's the ammo going to be stored? :3)

The A164 plain sucks. Man, i am a pilot on AmrA since the second came out, and i can't land with the A164. Even the softer landing destroys it. Even worse when you return to base damaged. Also, the Neophron CAS is MUCH better in everything. Hell, even the Buzzard is better. The AGM's never hit anything, GBU's like to not go into the lased target but prefer to missi it by a few inches, sending their penetrator straight into the ground, instead of the lased vehicle. Shriekers? Oh god. The sixties' Zunis do a better job. And yeah, it's 30mm sucks hard. And it's probably made out of balsa strenghtened cardboard.

Just to let you guys know and remember, the A164 is the futuristic version of the A10 Warthog, which exclusively uses HE rounds in its GAU-8. Those rounds are not meant to be used against tanks, but can easily shred APCs and LRVs.

With that said, it's why the A10/A164 are equipped with multiple types of rockets - anything the main gun can't destroy, the missiles will. Anti-Tank, Armour-Piercing, High Explosive, bombs.

If you want to compare the A164 to anything, compare it to it's predecessor, the A10.

I never had problems with the A-164 myself, at least when trying to take everything down with the big spinning noise maker. The A-10 can take down even a MBT with it, if you angle the shot right enough, but currently used IFVs and APCs it's more often firing against usually have a much thinner armour.
A very informative answer regarding the GAU-8's effectiveness against a modern battle tank.[www.quora.com]

By the way, regarding the "feel", I just love the default sound it makes. It always comes from the rear speakers on my 5.1 setup and is quite heavy on the bass, making you feel like you're shooting a really powerful gun.

After two years (Apr 12, 2014) and 1,300+ hours, I certainly hope that D_Wolf has gotten over his disappointment with the A-164.

Please check the date on the original post to see if the comments are even relevant. If they are, it makes more sense to create a new thread and link to the original post rather than necro'ing the old thread.
