Commanding your squad effectively
Hi,

Does anyone have any good tips & trix or a nice guide on how to command your squad well in the campaign?
Seems a bit messy with the command menu, I'm a bit confused, sometimes things are highlighted and sometimes thy are grayed out, for example I want to set a new formation or to command what combat mode they should use. Also, try to make them use stationary weapons.
Really like the ability to command, but it seems so unreliable. I have to save almost every minute or just before setting of any command or attack, just so I can roll back if the commands wont work or if the AI do some stupid stuff instead of what I ordered.

Any great Squad Command material out there?

Regards

Hey,

I gave up again playing with the allies like in Arma II i found easier to make them stop somewhere and do the work alone.

I tried but everytime they get shot, and it's complicated when you're not customed to the command mode.

Iam still playing the campain, stuck at the end of "Adapt" mission : ambush convoy because of that.

So I'll be checking this post for answers as well.

Thanks.

If you have a microphone, you could try using Voice Activated Commands. A friend recommended it and honestly, you have so much more control over your squad. There is a mission you can download that helps with learning to use VAC. Other than that, I would suggest using the editor and experimenting with different orders and see what works.

First things first, even if you know how to command your friendly AI, they still act extremely retarded.

Here are a few things I do with mine which increase their effectiveness:
1. Set all members of your squad to "Free to engage" (3 - 5) (use the "Hold Fire", "Open Fire" commands when you want/don't want them to fire, otherwise they'll shoot at anything that moves).

2. If wanting to be stealthy, obviously go "Stealth", but you should also make them go prone or copy your stance; usually they just run around and increase their chance of being spotted because a higher stance = a higher profile = higher chance of being detected.

3. When engaging enemies, do NOT have your squad following you/regrouped on you; in my experience, their top priority will be to follow you rather than fight the enemy, so if you move while fighting they will think about moving and pause firing. So, when fighting enemies, have them all (the AI with you) ordered to be moved very close to where their standing, or order them to stop, so that they have more autonomy (they're not following you anymore, they're doing their own thing based on the order you gave them). They're still pretty crap at fighting enemies, but they're slightly better.
Hum, I often use AI - in MP and SP.

1.) You need to know how your AI thinks (e.g. walking around low fences instead of jumping).

2.) if you tell them to go to a certain location always be sure to tell them how to act there (go there - watch that direction - keep low)

3.) if you want them walking in formation never tell them "danger", as they give up the form to be more flexible to use cover better.

4.) use your free view (turning head) to give commands. Figure out how it influences the command option in free look or iron.

5.) Know where your men are. If the fire power on a certain point is too much for the certain AI standing there, be ready to tell him to better hide/lay down - just to keep him alive.

6.) Coordinate flanking attacks, distractive maneuvering, cross-fire, and fall in the back-maneuvers. If enemy shoots that direction they can't care for the opposite direction at the same time. It's saving lifes more than walking in from only one direction.

7.) concentrate on leading the team. You as leader should not be distracted with playing rambo. Help your AI by discovering and marking targets, having a look into the next parallel lane to cross, and so on. Be eyes and ears for your AI team.

8.) Know the commands without looking on your keyboard. Typing Commands-codes is faster than any verbal order.

I know I'm not gonna be popular for this one, but you'd probably be a lot more satisfied playing with real people online. I know, I know, you asked for help in SP and I don't have ANYTHING against guys who play Singleplayer. But that's just my $0.02. :)

As for your question, I gave up on ARMA AI. They're really hard for me to work with, especially after being accustomed to leading humans. I do like the suggestions the other guys have though.

Thank you all.
I will try give it a new shot. Some really helpful tips!
I'm at the Win Campaign now and having trouble commanding my squad when trying to defend some hill against armored assault. There's so little time, but will try to split them up and command them to different posts.

This is by far the most effective way to control your squad. You will never have to touch the keyboard again.

I think I remember that one, had some trouble with it too, but I loved the mission, if its the same we talk about :)

If memory serves me well I think i did it like this. Took a couple of reloads of saves to find a good spot, but ones settled with my spot it was pretty do-able, once i succeeded I did it a couple of more times, with better result each time. First run all in squad died lol, but had so many saves I could go back to anywhere in time. But finally got one run with everybody alive. (pure luck was indeed a factor, though)

This is a pic of what i did kind of:
http://pichost.me/1710674/

Found a spot near a big house with large walls close to the road.
On the other side of the road there was water and kind of a beach and some large rocks.
I put all dudes without Anti-Tank hiding behind the walls hiding, they where set to normal behavior but to Hold Fire.
Then i put the Satchel Charge at the road slightly covered by the elevation of the road, maybe even a second one just beside it in the grass to be sure. I Don't remember.
Then Me and the Dude with AT rockets went hiding at the rocks. I think I set the AT Dude to hide stationery just behind me with Hold Fire.
Then waited, and when Armor Truck 1 reach just in front of the satchels I set them of. Truck 1 down. Then in the same seconds i ordered the AT Dude to attack Armor Truck 2. I believe this was the hardest part for me. Sometime he didn't ever shot. Then I ordered the Couple Of Dudes to attack the truck to. Or I commanded them All to attack the second truck. Different result all the times. Finally got em through alive though! :D

Anyway it was a fun mission. Even with the cost of 1000 saves and lives :D

Hope this helps you through it.

Regards

This wont really work for me. Often playing late nights and don't wanna make to much noise to wake up kids and the misses. ;b
Or just sound stupid to them during daytime, haha.

Do you by any chance have a gaming mouse or keyboard. The reason i ask is because i have a redragon Perdition (caparible to a naga) and this thing has 19 programmable buttons on the mouse. http://www.amazon.co.uk/Redragon%C2%AE-Perdition-Precision-Programmable-Cartridge/dp/B00GXFDDL4/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1395421031&sr=8-1&keywords=gaming+mouse+reddragon

I also use vac to command my squad alot in SP heck even in multiplayer CTI teatime warfare i use vac and my macros (default key binds) setup on the mouse. Just remember you can use F1 - F9 to select a squad mate induvidually if you do use the keyboard.

I highly reccomend DWVAC theres a tone of profiles about and its fully customizable. If you dont want to buy the software theres a mod on armaholic that in my opinion is far more optimized and better for arma 3 voice commands. But this software can be used with absolutely anything.

Thank you guys for the help.

Very helpful informations there but still...

You're right anteronoid I was talking about the escort supplies mission where you have to set an ambush and steal the truck.

No matter what I do it's a failure at the end.
My team mates won't copy my stance, not taking cover, not even engaging...
It's so frustrating after several attempts i wanted to give up again.
I almost managed to stop the truck but it escaped again as soon as I approached to steal it.

Next time I'll take the rocket launcher and try a few things myself cause when I ask my allies for engaging a target nothing happens.

Edit : Finaly made it !
A bit of luck I must confess, the truck got stuck in a rock so i got plenty of time to take care of the rest of the convoy. No loses. I had to be very patient and heal myself a few times.
Try to not get your engeneer killed to be able to repair the truck if needed.

"Spoiler" : you have to hide the truck next and escape ; They ask you to blow up the truck but I didn't cause it was too hot. I managed to escape very quickly and end of the mission !

See ya !

VAC is not an option for me, cant play late and shout comands, will wake the kids ans misses, but whenn I get my man cave, i will try it out. :)

I have the G19 keyboard though, can put macros in buttons, but what kind of macros would that be you mean? Can you suggest some combo of commands that you have found useful?
