Arma 3
New windows install windows 8.1 arma crash to desktop first run
First run after re-installing windows 8.1. fully up to date
GTX 680 ftw 4gb
i7-4770K at 4ghz

latest nvidia drivers

8gb ram

running on ssd.

Arma 3 crashed to desktop first run entering into a scenario.

Second run, loaded into editor fine crashes on exiting game black screen my monitor hard reset required.

Graphics auto detect function total waste of space. Why would I want to run the game at about 15 fps?

No matter what graphical setting distance and object levels high or low terrible stuttering, hitching every few seconds when flying.

Vegetation pop/ lod is horrendous. Grass can change shape right under your feet or pop in.

Trees change shape and pop in as you turn. totaly spoils emmersion of game. Things poping in is distracting, especially when you are scanning the landscape for enemy in dense woodland.

It would have been better to just leave the LOD at one resolution instead of different shaped vegetation poping in and changing all the time. Spoils the great landscapes and realism.

On foot I can get the game running at high fps up around 70fps on my settings, still with bad lod pop in. Reducing things doesnt help with anything. In certain circumstances such as facing certain ways during single player missions fps will drop to 30 to 40 even when nothing taxing is happening on screen.

Online runs bad unless you have the distance set so far down your playing in a cloud and with out vegetation.

arma 2 played so much better online, once they had sorted all the rubber banding out. Distance wise i could set it much higher while online.

it might be that you have no longer are using the same visual redistribution 2008 as wubdiws 8 ..... Im only guessing because i have had issues in past with windows 8.1 and havnt updated YET to it for that reason AutoCad software had issues even installing . So i assume if u had no probs with win 8 then its the version your running having issues with arma 3,,,, Roll back to 8

thanks BiZzR was just reading up on just that and directx problems.
Isthatyoudave? Jun 3, 2014 @ 2:23pm
got it working by un-installing the visual redistribution files and installing again.

Game now just has terrible stuttering and hitching latest nvidia drivers will check other drivers later.

you shouldnt have to do this when trying to get a game to run. All needed files should run auto.

try paying $6000 for AutoCAD software and have the same issue ... Ya should ONLY UPDATE WINDOWS when they have done testing on it and its run in per say ... I bet EVERYONE who brought win 8 when it came out there were some issues also , but now im sure fixed. But they use US as testers basically . Then fix it . After all their too busy making the program to worry about all other programs. Which if their not partnered with then they use their own coding. Good luck with it mate. I have had my fair share of problems with this game also. Eg ALPHA arma release. Was NOT FREE and we paid for the buggiest motha of a game. Sure i got the game now but i as i said to BIS feel after 9months of Alpha gameplay and helping test arma i think i deserved a free copy of arma after all the headaches :)) .... Cant ask for a free copy or FREE DLC content for us ALPHA boiz ! bah

I recommend playing it on STANDARD graphics dude in multiplayer and high graphics in the editor making missions. Unless you are running an R9 295X2, the fastest graphics card on the planet or next years GPU hardware. It took 3 years for people to be able to RUN Crysis on max graphics wiht high end hardware and only wiht the introduction to the 17 3770K's you can run ARMA 2 on max graphics at 40-60fps and even then you need the best of the best to even run ARMA 2 and that came out 5 years ago.

I think the best question for developers, is should they really be pushing their games far beyond current high end hardware? I remember playign Crysis on max wiht the best graphcis card money could buy in 2006 and it ran at 15 fps. Not till 3 years later we could actually run it on enthusiast and 8XAA and Vsync on. Its somethign theyve always done on PC.

Their are things being done... Gsync is one thing... QuickSync is another. And more coming to market after june. But i understand Nryan . However i dont have the issues you do. And i DID run arma 3 for 1 year on a sony Eseries laptop . Now i have a 2011 socket with a gtx780ti and 16gig ram. I dont ever have issues with arma... UNLES A MISSION IS MADE CR#P -(Shadowplay fps counter states 170fps at loading screen, in game its maxes out depending on mission. ) So long as your not having tearing or slow movements which would mean your getting under 25fps ..

I have checked all drivers, and verified game cache. As I said a full clean install arma 3 on SSD.
Arma's engine is very cpu dependant not gpu dependant so an r9 295x2 isn't going to help the situation. you can check this by looking at your gpu usage then add things like AA. The usage will go up as these are done gpu side. GPU usage drops to over half in some areas as the cpu bottlenecks the cards. This is the engine not the systems. Just a pity certain things have stepped up a little since arma 2 but somethings have gone backwards. I still think the game has some problems with the engine or simply the way things have been designed as fps can drop so low looking in a certain areas of the game, even where nothing much taxing is going on. Such as in the camp before missions.

Still have hitches every few seconds and pauses.

Lots of people having these issues with most latest nvidia drivers. So will continue to test.

Also I have watercooling ready to go in to from my old system will see how far I can push the cpu see if i get better results.

you should try setting any overclocks to default to see if they are the cause of any problems,i see you cpu is at 4ghz this tells me your running it on stock volts correct :) also go to disk defrag and you can trim your ssd :) (optimise) it wont defrag it in win 8.1

drive already trimmed, and the overclock is an MSI OC genie overclock so is running it itself. So wont be pushing voltages too much.

I havnt had this much stuttering before tended to only be when flying.

Game still crashes on exiting the game.

Wondering if its to do with an arma update. or if its still having issues with the visual redistribution software.

tried putting down all graphics settings still the same. So something is up.

its not the arma update like you i just bought an ssd and did a new install of win 8.1 and arma runs waaayyy smother on my new ssd.when installing your ssd do you also unplug all your drives too so only your ssd was installed then add windows?i ask cause windows can do silly things like install system files on to 2 drives.

No I didnt unplug the other drives, may have to try that next time.

Apart from it loading quicker I have never seen any difference to how smooth the game runs from the ssd, granted mine is a little older but still latest sata. The vegetation lod pop was still as bad as running from my regular drives.

There must be something up with the game an windows 8.1

its a huge improvment for instance when zooming in on a scope there is no more stutter its instant :) one more thing when you added you ssd installed windows did you just move arma 3 to the drive from another disc or do a clean install?its def not win 8.1 as thats what i have :)
