ALiVE - how to get started

I'm trying to play the mod, multiplayer, public servers.

What do I need to do? Someone claimed I could get it all off of STEAM by subscribing, while other guides show I need to download archived files to put in the game folder.

All guides I found so far are for making mission/maps. I just want to shoot things :)

I used to be knowledgeable on how to get mods on games when it took 16 files installed in a certain order, etc. I've gotten lazy with STEAM doing it all, so I'm kinda lost.

Also, ALiVE and ACE3 sounds fun. How do I go about playing on a public server that has both loaded (I noticed 1 or 2 of those).

Can't help you here, but I'm sure there are good tuts and guides hiding somewhere...

TBH you'll never find a lot of Public servers running ACE. ALiVE maybe, but ACE adds a level of detail that is not conducive to a good experience with the caliber of players that a typical Public server attracts these days.

If you're serious about ALive and ACE, you're best off looking for a casual MilSim group with access to a Private dedicated server and a half-decent mission creator.

There are a few public servers but not many your best bet if you want to play ALIVE/ACE is look for a milsim unit that uses it. They should be able to help you install the mods plus any others they use as most of the milsim units have their own websites forums with download instructions.

Again, there are a few but typically the style of game play necessary (Coordinated Coop vs AI) is usually not achieveable on a Public server.

If you're looking for current Coop-ish missions on public Servers ATM your best bet is Tactical Battlefield / Invade & Annex or their variants.

Most of my friends that have arma 3 play exile or epoch. But when they fancy some milsim we just host a local game using tunngle or hamachi. Alive runs pretty smoothly.

1. ALiVE Requires CBA_A3:
   http://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=450814997
   This is available on Steam so subscribe to it and let it install.
   
2. Grab the ALiVE MOD:
   http://alivemod.com/#Download
   Extract and install into your A3 MODs folder.
   
3. Grab some of the sample missions:
   http://alivemod.com/missions
   Put these into your MPMissions folder.
   
4. Fire up ArmA and point your mission of choice.

That's the basic outline of how to get up and running.
