They're testing new stuff etc to see how the community reacts so they can release Arma 4 in as good a state as possible in an improved engine.
Releasing a pre-modern warfare game in this year or quite a few years to come would be a big mistake considering the wars we currently have IRL. Horrible as they are, due to them people are more interested in modern warfare now than they are in pre-modern warfare.
After we've had peace for a few years then I can see such games make a return.
But if Reforger turns out to be Arma 4 just disguised with a different name while they work on it I am positive it will be a huge flop and since they release games with like 5-10 years in between they know they can't afford a flop, they got bills to pay.
I have overcome the challenges that A3 provides with its poorly-written engine by overcompensating and running hardware far beyond what is recommended. So 60+ FPS is never a problem for me, no matter how many objects appear within view.
Without the Eden Editor A3 would be just another boring FPS, like Squad, Call of Duty or Battlegrounds that couldn't keep my attention for more than a few hundred hours at most.
Assuming A4 is released with something like the Eden Editor, it will still take time - just like it did with A3 - to transport content from older versions of Arma to the new A4. Such as all the CUP mods which is everything from A2, for example.
I didn't put 3,750+ hours into building missions in A3 just to toss it all in the trash when A4 comes along. I would expect to have to recreate the mission files, but all the content should still be available so the mission files can be recreated.
I'm much more interested in the content and functionality of A4 than how pretty it looks or how fast it operates. So I expect that I will still be using A3 for at least the next couple of years, even if A4 were to be released tomorrow.
I wouldn´t even mind the graphics of Arma3 in Arma4 as long as the multicore utilization has been brought to a modern standard in the new game.
Currently the available "extreme" graphics settings in Arma3 blows away Reforger, imho.
And when i can, for example, chose "20k meters view-distance and worse textures" vs "5k meters view-distance and better textures", i sure go for the 20k option in such a game as OFP/Arma.
I mean...Just look at this...
Reforger cant compete.
