Arma 3

Serious question on aiming
How am I supposed to hit anything? I'm going through the campaign now and so far all I'm doing is a lot of mild jogging which drains my stamina and makes my gun sway like there's an earthquake. I always enter a fight completely out of stamina unless I want to tip toe everywhere. Even once I'm able to fully recover my stamina by laying down out of enemy line of sight, my gun still feels all over the place and holding my breath doesn't seem to make any difference regardless of my stamina level.

Please don't troll about me being some COD player or something (honestly never even played COD if you can believe it). I genuinely just want to understand if there's a simpler way to go about aiming or if it's just meant to be incredibly difficult even if they're only 50 meters away.

Even if you have recovered your stamina the weapon still will move a bit if you did that recently.

Try to find a point to put the weapon by pressing C or just press C when you are prone tho it can be hard to use uphill/downhill or useless this way.

Yeah, it is something that takes a moment to get use to. Sprinting should be rather avoided outside of emergency situations. Combat load is also important for stamina use, avoid carrying too much stuff (in base campaign 4 to 6 mags are plenty). Stance play a big role, shooting staying straight up will make it more difficult. Also weapon resting - when you are close to cover, even vertical (like a tree) and leaning to the side, in top right corner you will see icon informing you that your character is resting a weapon on it - that reduce sway drastically.

Double-tapping "C" to make you "Combat Roll" helps conserve stamina. Not a jog or sprint, but not a walk, a decent medium. It takes some time, but you can counter the sway with the mouse by slowly moving against it; your sight drifts down-right, gently sway up-left. If the target is moving, "lead the target" by firing in front of where they are; the further the target, the greater the lead. I also find semi-auto fire setting a bit more accurate, full-auto for close distances like CQB.

I feel like most of these tips are basically what the tutorial taught me. If that's the main information that I need to understand, then maybe I'm just not implementing them correctly or I don't completely understand how the combat in this game is supposed to work. It's definitely different from what I'm used to. Thank you for the help. I'll try again and hopefully something will click at some point.

The stamina is a bit more realist than most FPS games. but it actually should be much more IMHO.
(Running up a mountain IRL with a 100+lbs pack and sniping a target at 500yds while standing up leaning doesn't work. Actually the running up a hill part would not even happen except for the most fit athletes.)
Some servers do not have stamina enabled and you can run forever.
It does force the squad to work as a unit or get wiped.

The enemy unfortunately can one-tap you at distance while on the run behind trees and always manage to 'see' your one little pixel sitting statue-still in the dark shadows of the brush. It's just one of those Arma things to get used to. Crouching would be nicer if the grass were slightly shorter and it usually only works when engaging downhill or in the open.

Some players are actually quite good at push combat maneuvers while on the full run.
I prefer to run to next cover and peep until it's time to move again.

My group uses ACE settings to disable stamina and weight in game. While I like the concept of a machine-gunner being limited in speed and stamina compared to a rifleman I feel like Arma takes it too far. Of course it's a game and not real life, in real life there's a lot of walking over long distances for strategic objectives, a lot of waiting around, and obviously true movement you can't get in Arma. Half the time I can't mount my gun because it's a millimeter too short or tall so I personally feel no shame in removing it. It can definitely be a fun way to play in Milsim but I honestly don't know how BI expected people to play the game singleplayer with all the odds stacked against you (instant reaction AI, stamina, long distance travel, etc.)

This, take less gear if you need to perform active maneuvers. Use vehicles to move your gear. There is a lot more going into the decision to take more armor and storage vs minimal because depending on the AO and your function you may think, do I really need to take more armor when my role is to not be seen or hit at all?
Some guns are heavier than they should be, but it's to prevent teleporting abuse of them. You can tweak it out in singleplayer if you have to, cause it can be tedious.

That's awesome thank you. I was actually trying to find mods that modify stamina and weapon sway but I couldn't find any. I'm gonna try to play a little longer without the mod, but I'll probably be wanting it soon lol. Some people may call it cheating, but I'm just trying to have some casual fun against bots while still having at least some immersion.

So far I haven't even gotten past the first mission after the prologue, so I don't think there was an opportunity to modify my gear (unless I missed it). But that's still good to keep in mind for the future thanks.

Does that have something to do with weapon sway? I saw that setting but didn't know what it was. I'll look into it thank you.

I think its safe to say that weapon sway is an element of ArmA simulation that one have to learn and it definitely takes some time. It is something (significant sway after running) that is not standard in many shooters. Combining this with longer engagement distances is something that just lays on learning curve for this particular game.

If I'm not mistaken, your arms also have stamina to an extent. Try double tapping control to lower your weapon when you're in between fights. I may be mistaken on the arm stamina thing though because I haven't played unmodded in a long time.
