server hosting & ports
i'm currently trying to get a dedicated server up and running and had a question regarding ports.
for hosting client side, friends are able to connect no problem, but dedicated they are not able to connect. i'm suspecting it's my ports, but was curious why the client host works. does Arma 3 make use of steam servers for client side hosting and that's why it works so easily?

Arma use UPnP for client hosting, iirc. for Dedicated you'll need to enable it explicitly by command string, or open ports in firewall. google "Arma server ports", you'll find the official wiki page.

so i'm a little confused. when i host a server from the client, as in going to the multiplayer tab and clicking host server, i have always hosted without checking the UPnP box. does this mean my ports are already forwarded, and that isn't necessarily the issue with my dedicated server?

edit for clarification: my friends are able to join even with UPnP box unchecked.

Portforwarding is setup correctly if your friends are able to connect without UPNP, you might be giving them the wrong IP address for the dedicated server. Make sure to give them your external IP address and not your internal IP address. Otherwise they will not be able to connect. You can google what your External IP address is by putting your IPv4 address found in Command promt into any browser. When i host servers i use port 2304, it seems to work the best for me. Just get your external IP address and it should be good to go. Players cannot connect to your IPv4 address or your routers internal IP even though you may be able to thus making the server seem like its working. Also if you are portforwarding, make sure to leave UPNP off. UPNP will override the portforwarding

if you're not sure on how to port forward, PFNU (Port Forward Network Utilities) is a great free tool that will check to see if your ports are open and it can even forward ports for you. Just make sure to leave UPNP off once again

I use FASTER to run a dedicated server off my gaming laptop. Ever since I did that, our KP liberation games between my group of friends and I had amazing performance increases.

ran into too many issues with port forwarding so we opted to use ZeroTier for VLAN. so far client hosting is working, however the dedicated server is not able to be seen by anybody but myself (in the LAN tab)

i know it's a tall order asking for guesses, there could be a lot going on. but is there any common issues this could be attributed to?

EDIT: is there a way to view the IP the server is hosting on? weird question, but when i use direct connect with both the virtual ip and physical, it doesn't show up on my end. it is only visible on the LAN tab, and only by me. so something seems like maybe it isn't set up correctly for the server? i think it might be that the dedicated server is hosting it as if it's on the internet, when i want to host it on lan so those on the vlan can see it?

When I use FASTER, the server shows up for me in the LAN tab, but when I join it, my steam friends can join me threw the friends tab.
