Point of laser designators?
Just kinda wondering what the point of using them are?

Back when the game first came out you could lock on to lasers with the Titan launcher but that was removed in a patch a while back ago.

From what I can find only one type of bomb for planes can use laser lockon right now and the hellfire from ACE3.

So what is the point of carrying our laser designators? I see no obvious use for them any more.

to measure the distance

Some mods have laser guided mortar and artillery shells. The designator lets them hit a dime, which is really useful for minimizing collateral damage.

RHS has some laser guided shells, I think CUP might as well. 3CB is also a maybe.

Cool!
Appreciate it!

I use it as a hand held thermo target finding thing..

Better than bino's or rangefinders, if you have the option you might as well take it. It can take the range, laser designate, use thermals and has a pretty decent zoom.

binoculars with thermal imaging can come in handy

Superb on Tanoa and other maps with dense flora. I would advise avoiding getting too used to them, though, as thermals in this game are like crack. Use them too much and you start to build a dependency.

I had actually completly forgotten that they have thermals and the others dont.. :P
That is a very good point.

(edit:)
Although as Berlioz sais, we rarely use thermals in our ops. At best the AT/AA get's to use a Titan or potentially if we have vehicles that has that built in with their turrets.

There are laser-guided weapons in Vanilla too, not just in mods.
CAS planes wth GBU (like the Buzzard) can lock to any target that's laser-painted. The bomb will even follow the laser after it's been dropped.

Have you tried Tank Destroyer? Rhino has a missile munition which can hit laser locked target, no line of sight.
The M4 SPG (Scorcher?) also has laser guided shell.
Also both NATO cluster bombs can be laser guided.
All vanilla (some paid dlc).
Csat should have similar munitions but I'm not fan of them.

Rangefinders don't have thermal tho!
