But I think BIS said recently that there will be no ARMA3, this is the end for the franchise..
I'm a VR player and the reasons are lost on me. Can you elaborate? I get having a plastic box strapped to your face makes it difficult to see the keyboard, but most veteran arma players have the muscle memory to be able to hold their own if they couldn't see the keyboard. If anything you'd have an advantage solely with head tracking and spacial awareness in VR. Add motion controller support and grip stock and pancake players won't stand a chance
Also, Arma 3 isn't the end. They have been hiring at bohemia for people with military game experience and it would be a massive waste at this point to have spent all that money building Enfusion for DayZ not to have arma 4.
(Caution: Speculation ahead) You can probably expect an announcement for Arma 4 between the end of this year and the beginning of 2022
I've managed to get a poor-man's VR running using:
- Virtual Desktop on Oculus (it feels like a giant curved screen in front of you)
- OpenTrack (it detects the Oculus as a native source, no need for cameras)
It's all 2D, of course, but very immersive, especially when flying helicopters. A promise of how awesome it could be in real VR.
Download and setup "opentrack" software for head tracking its free, for input use "valve steamvr", for output use "freetrack 2.0 enhanced" then click on the hammer icon next to the output "freetrack 2.0 enhanced" and pick "use freetrack disable trackir" as filter use "accela". you can play with deadzones sensitivity and invert pitch in there if needed.
Find the key binding options in the Opentrack software and bind "center view" to tab "start tracking" to "num pad enter" or better yet a mouse button if you can and "stop tracking" set to "num pad +" or another mouse button if you can (this will be better on mouse for quick access to be able to turn off head tracking and steady your gun 100% in combat.
I start the Opentrack software after i load steamvr and vorpx and before I open arma 3 and I test my settings in arma 3 with something like playground 2.0. as it has vehicles to play with.
Once your in a Map hit your delete button and set vorpx options to Immersive screen mode, scene = none, 3d strength = .43 (u can try to find something better for you), screen distance = -1.0 and use geometry 3d, turn tracking off in the vorpx menu too. Make sure your head tracking device is enabled in the arma contollers menu and In the arma video options you can set the arma menu to the largeto make it easier to navigate the menu. Then Restart the game again so vorpx can calculate the FOV.
Play around with your other graphic settings in Arma so you can maintain a good frame rate
Im running a 9900k 2080ti and have alot of stuff set to high and ultra with about 3k view distance highest anisotropic filtering and lower antialiasing getting more than 60fps.
It can bug out while configuring and you might need to reboot a few times lol but once you get it going it should work really well.
Let me know how you go, What are you running and what VR headset are you using?
Lol i'm running a Rift S. I managed to max everything out in arma, except a few frame reducing options with immersive mode. I'll try turning down the 3D strength and if that helps. It's just very hard on my eyes, like i feel like i'm risking eye damage if i play too long. usually going for about 20-30 minutes before i give my eyes a break. Having the screen far away is kind of immersion breaking
I am using the "use trackIR, Disable Freetrack" in opentrack as freetrack doesn't work as smoothly and the game is none the wiser.
Unfortunately i'm running an AMD 5500XT, which doesn't allow you to set a resolution higher than your monitor is capable of. Per their guides, i'm not even really able to set whatever resolution they indicated for AMD users so i'm left here scratching my head. i'm confident this is why my eyes are straining but idk...
If you work out a way to change your resolution you might want to try creating a custom desktop res of 2,560 x 1,440 60hz or 80hz for your rift S seeing as Rift S has one single screen at that res, and see how that works out for you.
