Night time unplayable without Night vision
Hi guys, On my Arma 3 night time is unplayable without NV. Ive tried all different gamma and brightness settings but nothing works for me. The sky gets brighter but ground texturs remain pitch black. Now I am aware that night time is dark but seriusly, when did anyone go out on a moonless dark night in winter a long way from any lights and find they couldnt see their hand in front of their face? Night time is just darker not pitch black! Is there a fix for this or is it a known issue with Nvidea cards? I have played all the Arma series from the very first release but never seen it as bad as Arma 3 now.

So much like real life then? Perhaps do what people do in real life and turn on your flash light.

I'm not sure what you mean. Moonless nights tend to be very dark. Especially when there are no cities around. For example your can see the top of the tree line but nothing smaller and in front of those trees.
Nights in Arma 2 were pitch black aswell, but could be tweaked with gamma and brightness.

Some suburban kid whose never seen a night not paluted with light from cities and such, In real life bro, when i walk ouside my house, I can get to the street and then not see ♥♥♥♥ if there is any cloud cover or no moon, If i have a full moon I can see well enough to count rocks on ground, if not then i couldnt see my hands 2 inches from my eyes. The night in arma is dark but not unreasonably, use a flashlight, move slow and hope ur enemies don't have NV otherwise ur ♥♥♥♥♥♥.

Thank you. This guy is complaining that the night is dark (and full of terrors.. sorry)
It's like complaining you can't swim without getting wet.
Now either go get a flashlight or NV's.

I was recently playing one where the NV wouldn't even penetrate the darkness. It was pretty rough

Why do you people use the term "real life"? This is a game. A simulator that is, but in the end a game. We play this game for our own enjoyment. Not to simulate reallife, doing that most of my day already by working, doing stuff in the house, whatever.

I for one hate it that gamma no longer works, it sucks donkeyballs.

I venture that we do play it to "simulate real life." Hence the term simulator.

People want these things as authentic as can be in a simulated virtual environment. That's just the way it is, and most of us know that Is what's meant in the essence when "real life " is a term used.

And unless your work day consisted of rolling round at night like a tooled up Valhalla Bada$$ visiting pain and suffering on various armed scum bags....... then this is probably ok to simulate for you.........

Not entirely sure what the term "you people" means... I guess you're too cerebral or living so relentlessly in real life to willingly suspend your disbelief for the enjoyment of a game...

I have to disagree with your assessment of nighttime in Arma3, at least under ACE3. I created a nighttime mission for a guerrilla type dude that involves his having to cycle back to base on back roads and cross country without lights, NV, or GPS, only a map and the map tool. (Guerillas are poor.) This was in Tanoa.

It was around eleven on a June night with a one-quarter Moon, and there was light enough to cycle by, although the shadows were inky black. I was impressed by the lushness of the nightscape--the Moon even casts shadows that shift as it moves across the sky. It looked very realistic to me and reminded me a lot of the nighttime marches I did when I was in the real army.

In subsequent versions of this mission, I actually fought in darkened hallways and rooftops using only the light lent by a few distant streetlights and the Moon. Arma3's muzzle flashes are something else--especially when you're surprised in the dark by the sudden appearance of an enemy. (He missed. I didn't. But boy, does it get the heart going.)

Of course, if you make it overcast, make it January, and make the Moon new, it will most definitely be Black-Forest dark at midnight. If you're going to eschew NV under such conditions, I recommend you remove NV from the other units and remember to include Mr. Sanchez's headlamps and lots of chemlights in your loadout.

If, on the other hand, you want enjoyable night action without NV, I suggest you adjust your scenario to make sure the Moon is full and the sky is clear. It makes a huge difference. A full Moon is actually bright enough to read by, if the print is not too small.

Yes, Arma3 is a game. But its reputation is built on it being a reasonably realistic simulator, not an interactive movie like COD. Some police tactical teams even use it for training.

So one day when little Raven was in the Army.... walking through a forest on a training exercise.... It was a moonless, cloudy, and rainy night..... NODs were the only thing to help see in the dark.... with the addition of a IR Helmet light to aid in the vision..... either way I still stepped into a hole in the ground and almost died.

Morale of the story, NVG's gives the person wearing them to see in the dark, Kinda.... your depth perception is gonna be off but then again its better than stumbling around with nothing. Arma gets the lighting just right especially with Ace 3. When its light out you can see everything, when its dark out... well put on your NODs or turn on a flash light at your own risk of getting shot at.....

As an amateur astronomer I can tell you that most nights are not completely dark like in this game, not even out in the boonies where I do most of my observing. An awesome dark night far from any cities and with no moon is very rare and even then there's enough light from the stars themselves to see well enough to get around.

Now, once you get into a thick forest that's a different story. Just like sunlight, trees shade you from starlight and it can be pitch black.
