Arma 3
Are you guys liking the futuristic approach ARMA 3 APEX is taking?
It feels like every release since ARMA 2 has been trying to add in futuristic weapons, vehicles, and personal armor that is barely existent in the real world. I know some of the technology put in their games comes from prototypes of real vehicles being developed but it is rare to see any of this technology currently implemented in the field in the fight against ISIS etc. In my own personal opinion, however, I would like to see them keep their games to the reality on the present battlefield. I am a former soldier who has spent time training on US bases and never have I seen such vehicles being used openly yet. Furthermore, the fictional Iranian Army tanks and APC's used in ARMA 3 looked rediculous including their paint jobs. it sours this game for me. I feel like Ghost Recon and Call of Duty took the "futuristic approach" in their games and it made me stop playing them and go back to ARMA 2. But now ARMA 3 appears to be joining the trend. I am sure ARMA 3 APEX is a great DLC if you are looking for something fun but I don't see the realism i got when I played their previous games. I must note that I enjoyed ARMA 3 for its graphics and the game it was but I do not want to see them progress even further into futuristic gear that is not yet on the battlefield in their main campaign. I feel like that would be better left as a DLC. In all honesty, the earthquake creater that is disovered at the end of the ARMA 3 campaign was extremely lame.

No!

I am absolutly no liking the approach Arma is going in.
The guns are stupid the vehicles look stupid, it's all going in a bad direction in my oppinion.
I mean i like that Apex added good ol AK and some more low tech launchers, but still it's all going to 'near future' thing that is really anoying.
Mx guns sounds like ♥♥♥♥, gimme a good ol M4A1 and i'll be happy.
Half of the weapons sound like they took two tin cans and smashed them together, then altered their pitch to make a gun sound.
It's still not TOO futuristic which is fine... but pretty mcuh everyone i know that has played Arma way more than me and played the previous games has this same opinion. I think that Bohemia is trying to be 'cool' and add 'cooler' stuff into the game, which as a SIMULATOR you shoulnd't worry about looking cool, you should worry about doing it right. Etherway i mean i'll still probably play thousands of hours of Arma, just think that the near-future direction it's going in, is anoying.

I really don't care whether I have a m4a1 or a mx rifle. As long as it shoots and kills the baddies, I'll have fun. I play arma for the teamwork and the satisfaction of completing a mission using tactics and such that I don't really find in any other game.

Also, this game is not a SIMULATOR. A real simulator will cost more than $60 and probably not sell on steam.

I couldn't care less about the setting. If I can script and create a mission, or fool around in the editor I am happy.

Personally I would have preferred to have real world kit and vehicles in Arma.
But.
Most things in Arma3 aren't that high tech. When I first saw the devestation that a GMG causes in Arma on infantry I was like 'stuff this unrealistic and over powered weapon'... then I saw they already exist in reality. A month or so ago US SF were criticised for wearing the Kurdish YPG insignia in Syria while embedded with them fighting ISIS, and the photo's being shared had the team manning a GMG technical. Only difference between the way it's used may be ammo capicity and how current tech uses a belt to feed and a gunner to be up top with it, as opposed to in Arma where the ammo loading is hidden and the gun is remotely operated from inside, so no exposed top gunner. Thats also the same difference between humvee's and MRAPs in realty vs Arma. While this makes it harder for infantry to fight back, it's not very much of a high tech stretch to see.
So what else is high tech? Anti-tank missiles with computer locking? Already exists in the way of Javelin and others. Javelin is actually more advanced than the game because it fires up into the air and come down through the weakest point of the tank, the gun turret. Auto-cannons on APC's? BMP2 in reality has one. Night vision and thermal vision in vehicles? Already exists, though less clear view than what is presented in the game, and of course less prevalance (like armoured cars not having one for the gunner).

So yeah... what have I missed?

I agree with OP. The semi-future stuff and non-aligned political/nations factions that are not realistic annoyed me. While some of the small-arms, gear and camo patterns are real, it feels disorientating and detached from authenticity.

I would like one of the old ideas during the VBS1 days and having a campaign in the Falklands.

Korea, Winter War, WW1, Vietnam/China border war, Chechnya, Iran/Iraq war, 6-day war, etc...

So whiny, so dumb.... it's been told many times that ARMA 3 is not futuristic and every single thing has rational explanation. And what is this ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ about "every release since ARMA 2" BAFs are futuristic? PMCs are futuristic? Or may be ACR doesn't exist in real life? Bohemia Interactive is unique and they know what are they doing.

MRAPs, like these? [65.media.tumblr.com]
Weapons [i.kinja-img.com] operated from the safety of the vehicle instead of manually by hand?

MRAPs are widely used by modern militaries, as well as a variety of remote-controlled weaponry. Latest russian MBT with a fully unmanned turret [www.sciencedebate2008.com] where loading is automatic and gunnery is remote-controlled.
Most things that are in ArmA 3 are actually used right now. Most NATO vehicles are current US or Israeli designs. CSAT is a bit more made up, and some aerial vehicles are only "inspired" by modern equipment. The biggest offender in the made-up department are personal weapons, but even those aren't all fictional.

Yep see, there you go folks.
I'm wondering what OP's opinion is in regard to all these counter points.

If you don't like the setting, install the CUP MODs and go back to all the ArmA II goodness. Or use the RHS MODs to move forward a little and use the more European maps to get your fix.

ArmA is and always has been a platform that we can mould into whatever we want. You don't want the future then go bury your head in the past. Not futuristic enough, find the Halo or Star Wars MODs and live there.

What I'm thinking is that OP isn't really to perturbed by what BI have chosen to include, but rather that they aren't producing the assets that they think they should be.
Nertresfort Jul 11, 2016 @ 3:03am
I don't like the futuristic stuff ArmA 3 has, and while it is true that you can get any type of content with mods, it's kinda stupid that BI would not listen to their community feedback because of something like modders doing their job... just like bethesda!

Guns are pretty generic and mediocre, for example the whole SPAR are so similar... at least i feel like im using the same gun with different types of mags.
Gilgen Jul 11, 2016 @ 3:11am
i dont give a ♥♥♥♥ its still a good game you are just another mad boy. In the end its a game!
Turtle Jul 11, 2016 @ 3:13am
If you do not like the way the game is currently, then you have the option of modding it to a style you like. Or you can not play.

But that's none of my business.
Nanoha Jul 11, 2016 @ 3:34am
I have no issue with how futuristic Arma 3 is (is it futuristic? I didn't really think so but then I have no military experience). As someone has already pointed out there is the CUP mods which are great.
Zagger Jul 11, 2016 @ 3:59am
I bet you they thought machine guns were unrealistic or too futuristic in WW1...
SuperSenpai Jul 11, 2016 @ 3:59am
