Double-tapping the Left Alt key accomplishes the same thing as two single-taps.
OK I changed my bindings to default, and I still don't get what I'm after, with single tapping, holding, or doubletapping the left alt key.
Here's the specific behavior I want to configure:
> I'm flying around, using my mouse movements to bank left, right, forward, backward.
> I press FREELOOK, and now I can look out the side of my heli. BUT my mouse is NO LONGER controlling banking, until ...
> I press FREELOOK again. Now the mouse is banking my heli again, BUT I AM STILL LOOKING OUT THE SIDE OF THE HELI. My view does not center again. (Until I tell it tow.)
That's what I'm hoping for. What I get now, instead, is my view ends up re-centered. Which is useful, most often, but not always.
NOTE - the behavior I'm looking for is accomplished if I plug in my joystick and use the hat-stick, whose bindings are below "Freelook" and say "Look up left, Look up, Look up right", etc.
Considering you're planning to get TrackIR or something similar, then what I've just explained in this post won't matter, but until then, this is the best option. Not the smoothest one, but the best of both worlds.
I'm just surprised that we don't have the OPTION of looking around with the mouse, and then turning off freelook, and having our view STAY where it was, offcenter. E.g. when we want to angle our (now static) view downward (toward our feet) during a landing.
