Base-game 7.62x51mm, 6.5x39mm, and 7.62x54mm are a little light in the penetration department. I really wouldn't say that the SMGs can shred infantry, and transport helicopters, since sub-machine guns are things like the 9x19mm MP5. Light, but with little range and power against even typical body armor - let alone vehicle armor. The proof is in the configs. You should almost always go for the heavier MGs like the SPMG and Navid, because they both virtually ignore body armor up to and including the carrier special and have an easy time penetrating things that the 7.62-class MGs cannot. They'll also easily defeat tires and even the remote-control turrets on the MRAPs with accurate fire.
