As for weapons, I use this:
http://armedassault.wikia.com/wiki/ArmA_3_Weapons
1.8(average human height) x1000 mm/ how many mil dots tall , will give you an estimated target range
bare inmind you might have to correct for different field of view settings , of which you would change the mili metres
its a good idea to test this out first just so you know that the calibration is right , do it on the editor
For loadout, I would go with most of the normal rilfeman stuff (smokes, frags, an armoured vest, and so on), but take a heavier rifle (of course a heavier weapon means you might have to take less grenades or not go with the heaviest armour). So in base Arma that would mean going with a 7.62mm weapon like the MK18 most of the time over a 6.5mm weapon like the MX. Most of the weapons above 7.62mm are a bit too heavy for my taste and leave you with little room for your other gear.
The MXM is also an option, but for me it would depend on the squad loadouts, the mission, and how I am feeling that day. A mission mostly set in built-up areas (30 round mags would help here, and you don't need really long range power as much), with the rest of your squad using MX family rifles (you can share ammo), and I would likely take the MXM over a 7.62mm weapon.
A bipod is useful since it helps steady your weapon quickly. While you might not always need it, you will use it more often then a rifleman would. In terms of scopes, I would pick something with good zoom, but not too much zoom. The MOS (I think thats the one) is a great example, since it has a good mid level zoom, can be zeroed up and down from its base 300m, and still has a backup sight for the times you get into closer range combat (at some point you will be clearing buildings, so be prepared).
So to sum it all up your job is to carry the heavier gear that allows you to enage foes beyond the range that normal rifles are meant for, while still being part of a squad.
