For accessing the servers you will need to install the MODs that are being used on that particular server. This can be a barrier to new players but it is also the main advantage of ArmA III as a platform.
There have been a lot of messages refering to the A3Launcher[a3launcher.com] to manage this process of downloading the required MODs for a server and connecting. Unfortunately I have no experience with this program, but I'm sure that someone who does will post here with better details for you.
Also, using the built in Arma 3 launcher, when you click play in steam, let the launcher complete it mod update process before proceeding into the game, otherwise you may get errors.
