I flew close air in support of Marines in Beruit (1983) and the USMC FACs called the targets in meters or klicks (as appropriate).
It's really not that hard. People MAKE it hard.
Start simply.
For speed "bracket it"...
100 kph is about 60 mph
Using that 100 reference point lets you ballpark the mph
So... 50 kph (half 100) would be 30 mph (half 60)
And so on up or down from 100
For distance, use something you already are comfortable with...
... 1 meter is darn close to 1 yard. Any American football fan can get their head around that.
... 1 football field is 1/10 of a klick
... 1 klick is 10 football fields.
The FAC would call... "200 meters east of smoke" etc. I'd think YARDS. :-)
Seriously, at 400 miles an hour and low to the ground it's darn close enough.
Of course another sport besides football can be used but you get the point.
If you approach it like that it is a lot easier to embrace.
People often make the math too much of the focus.
In aviation they made the focus being able to visualize your target's location.
So... if the math conversion approach is frustrating treat it as a spatial problem.
After a while it will be natural.
.
When they report C just double and add 30 to get an approximate F
25 C is... 25 x 2 = 50 + 30 = 80 F
(actual is 77 F but again we're trying to let you think fast under fire)
Slick huh? Again, not exact but typically it will meet your needs in the field.
Anyone want to know how to calculate a compass reciprocal quickly? :-)
That is great for running rear-quarter intercepts on bandits.
.
Imperial is like a rollercoaster, all over the place.
Thanks.
I'm too new to Arma 3 to help anyone with the sim.
But I want to give back to the community for all the A3 vets that have helped me since I came onboard.
Reading posts gives me playing tips but also reminds me of things I was taught in the fleet.
