Mods aren't required for objective based, coop or pvp gameplay, arguably that's mostly what the games built-in multiplayer modes are actually about it's just that many public servers don't bother with them, opting instead for non-tactical free for all mods like King of the Hill and Wasteland. (That's right, KoTH is a mod)
There are also hundreds of tactical multiplayer scenarios in Steam Workshop and elsewhere.
If you want to up the realism of the game itself, then again there are lots of mods to do that, the most famous of which is ACE.
Project reality combines some of both, it introduces a new game mode, though arguably not one that isn't offered by other more popular mods and it makes changes to things like the medical system so that it's more realistic and complex (no magic heal-all medkits) - again, systems like ACE go into much more realism and detail.
You could combine sector control/coop gameplay from the base game with parts of ACE and ACRE for more tactical gameplay. This is in fact what most mil-sim groups do.
One of the gamemods with the worst performance I ever played.
This mission need to be run on a dedicated server, this mission will be done this week and i will put it on a server
Squad is seriously lacking and ArmA has the sh|ttest game modes (virtually none are PvP), this will be a god send for old school arma vets and a massive breath of fresh air for the BF:PR players.
Some of the guys from TacBf are developing a new mod: https://forums.bistudio.com/topic/194148-frontline/
It's still in testing. They have a discord channel if you want to check it out.
EUTW.NET is a server very similar to PR:BF2. No mods required. AAS. But there are some differences, you can buy equipment based on its class. I like it very much and I feel a good immersion. Teamplay is required. The community plays seriously. Worth trying. Despite my tall pig, I have good FPS ever.
Players limit is 61.
Like you, I hope I find a PR for ARMA III in the future. But in the meantime, I have a lot of fun on this server that I told you.

See you later.
