How do I change variable zoom?
I know how to change the zoom level on most scopes, with the numpad + and - buttons, but I can't figure out how to zoom in and out on scopes that have variable zooming (think the binoculars and the nightstalker). Any idea what buttons these are and where in the controls menu can they be rebound?

Ok, I figured it out. The thing about the binoculars (and the nightstalker) is that since they are variable zoom scopes, they will max out their zoom levels if you *hold* down your aim button. This is absolute trash because if you play with hold to aim, you will basically ALWAYS max out their zooms when you try to aim down sights. The + and - buttons don't work because while holding down the mouse, the zoom is continuous maxed out so you can't use the - button to lower the zoom level. Since I play using the arma 3 alt control scheme which uses hold to aim, this always happens.

Now, the fix: Go to settings -> controls -> weapons. Look for where it says "optics" and "optics temporary". Since I play on arma 3 alternative, "optics" is bound to numpad zero while "optics temporary" is bound to hold right mouse button. Since I want to be a) continue using hold to aim and b) use my binoculars/nightstalker without having to remove my hand from the mouse, I have rebound it so that "optics" is now double click right mouse ("optics temporary" is still set to hold right mouse). You could also set optics to a single right mouse click, but I find that the game is kinda jank when it comes to differentiate a single click and a hold. While I can't use hold to aim on the nightstalker, I can still hold to aim on other optics, which is nice, and there are only 2 variable zoom scopes in the game (binos + nightstalker), so this shouldn't be too big of an issue.

This fix should also work for anyone else using a hold to aim control scheme, such as industry standard or your very own custom scheme. Just make sure there are no key conflicts.

I swear this wouldn't even be a problem if they didn't make it so that holding down the zoom key maxes out the zoom of variable scopes. Like we already have the plus/minus buttons to change zoom levels, what's the point of this "feature"?

No, I mean how to change the variable zoom on the binoculars (or nightstalker scope). When I use these scopes, I can't figure out how to change the zoom level and they always end up in their max zooms. The + and - buttons don't work.

As for the changing between the primary and secondary sights, I already have that figured out a long time ago.

I use mouse button 4/5 for zoom in/out. But I forgot if it's a default setting or not, and I can't find where to rebind. Will look for it a bit harder but no guarantee..

Apparently I can't mark my own comments as answers so if someone would quote my answer above and I'll mark that comment as the answer. That way anyone with the same problem can have it easily resolved.
The author of this thread has indicated that this post answers the original topic.
