Squad has about 4,000 daily players. Sure, I do have to agree to an extent but the people there are not automatically milsim-grade just because they play Squad. Squad is not a ballbusting "gotta get tactical or else" type like SWAT 4 with SEF or UT99 Infiltration and so it accepts those who are not digital commandos with perfect field tactics and flawless radio discipline.
We've got KOTH, Life, and Exile nimwits out the ars.e, on that we can definitely agree. They're a cancer on our community and on the values that Arma did once stand for. Now we've got newbies all over the shop with a lack of direction because the good and pure modes like Co40, Co27, BMR, EUTW, and Liberation are on their last knees while KOTH remains unchallenged.
I personally just think that this generation of gaming is incompatible with a shooter that demands a long attention span. If Squad provides some competition, then perhaps Bohemia will really kick it into gear, but they don't have the numbers to push against Bohemia very well.
Just because the game is overflown with "Life" servers doesn't mean you have to cave in and leave for some other (imo worse) option.
If we want to actually reclaim Arma, it starts by convincing our dozens of one-week four-man milsim "units" to merge together into larger forces that can maintain large servers.
Why do you care how people decide to play Arma? For me, I do not play KOTH or Life... although I have tried both. I haven't played Exile in about a year or so but I enjoyed it. Put a lot of hours into it. Same thing with DayZ mod and Breaking Point. I've also tried some mil sim stuff and have played a ton of mission and scenarios.
I never get mad that someone else wants to play Arma differently than the way I play. I mean... what exactly are you mad about? The fact that no one wants to play Arma the exact way you play? Did it ever occur to you that maybe people on this planet do not enjoy the same things the same way you do? You call these people a cancer, but what would happen to Arma if they never showed up in the first place? The game wouldn't have probably 90% of their sales and customer base. An actual cancerous attitude in the Arma community would be one that wished people went away or one that complained about how certain people play it.
For me, what makes Arma so special... is how easily it can be modded and how the experience can be tailored to any one gamer who is looking for something in particular. I can play with a mil sim group on Fridays and play Exile any other day.
I think the life servers are boring and immature, generally... but why get mad at people for wanting to play it? More players is better for Arma, not bad. You seem to confuse what is better for you, compared to what is better for the rest of the world. The rest of the world gets to decide this. Not you.
I've been playing Arma 2 and 3 for a very long time. There have always been newbies popping their heads around wanting to know how to play. Arma is a completely different type of game and universe than what most gamers are aware of. Once they realize what it is they want to dive in. You and I were both there one day.
I'm not into Squad at all. I've tried it twice on free weekends and both times couldn't get into it. I would much rather play Arma.
Oh sweet summer child. No game can appeal to all demographics at once. If it does, it becomes diluted and fails to find direction.
Plagued by "Special" Forces.
I'd like to join some A3 Milsims, the few I have done have been excellent. My only staple these days is the odd Zeus game that gets trashed by some person or with a mental illness and it just becomes a waste of time.
So KOTH is pretty much it for now. Still has the console sandbox but a lot more freedom and some excellent team playing too.
Hundreds of years of warfare reveal to us that home field advantage as well as knowledge of The Art of War (Sun Tzu) will buy the poorly-equipped a massive advantage over the well-equipped types that fail to understand true tactics.
ENVG-IIs and the like are crutches.
