Now I have never tried or saw anyone messing with this, but if you're really good at this kind of thing go ahead.
The top thing about that helmet, it's a full screen mode. Meaning you don't have the circle like wearing regular NVG's.
Unless there is an 'unrealistic' NVG mod, it's always going to be green. Green is the best color for night time being it reflects the most light. Hence why military NVG(usually called NOD's) are always green. :)
Green is used for NVGs as we can differentiate more shades of green than any other color. (Or so I believe). Changing to a different colour may hinder your sight in game. The special purpose helmet has a night vision mode, and also a black hot thermal mode. (To add to a previous comment by KingZher0)
