How the hell do you lock on with GBU's
Ok, sorry guys, I am frustrated as hell right now. Been trying to get the bombs to lock on for over a week now. I have watched multiple video, but in each one they get the lock on icon. In my case it don't. I only get the single square. {I expect the usual diamond to overlap, like I have seen in some videos). In another video someone only gets the square (like me) but his changes color. He simply keeps the laser on the target and sure enough the bomb falls onto it. In my case, I get the square, keep my laser on it (square never changes colour) but after dropping the bomb, it doesn't even get close to the target. I know to press R to lock on. I even disengage with T then reengage. This issue also goes for AG rockets. I only get the one square.
So here I am thinking. Maybe the tagets I am targetting have to have a heat signature since A laser guided bombs follows the Heat signature right? :/ So I go into an editor with a friend give him a tank hand have him drive around for a bit, and shoot. I go into my jet, lock onto the glowing white tank and......... Same damn thing. No lock on.

tldr; How the hell do you get the lockon system to work correctly. I know about pressing R. I know about lasering the target. I know the difference between Heat seaking and laser guided. But all I get is a single white box around my target.

Vehicle? Range? Mods?

Correct me if im wrong but im pretty sure its T to lock on, unless I changed my keybinds, I dunno since I use a HOTAS. Also, make sure you angle the bomb correctly, because GBU's are not a simple fire and forget weapon, you have to make sure you have it angled at a acceptable degree radius to release it on target

Vehicle: all Nato Jets (A164, and the other two (forgot the names i believe hornets)

Range: Pretty much all heights. Tried from 1500m, 1000m, ~800m, all the way to roughly 400m.
The distance is difficult since I have most aids turned off. But I would say as far as 1.5 km out to as little as 500m.

Mods: None

T is indeed to laser a point. R to o switch targets (i believe). Most people press R to make sure the system starts locking on.
But even then. I have tried holding T to lock on with no avail.
If anything, I will record some gameplay, maybe someone will see what I am doing wrong

GBU 12 are laser guided bomb, either you or someone else needs to lase the target, you press T to lock on ( R will switch to the next lock-able target, sometimes that's more efficient). Once you do that, drop the GBU 12 in relatively the same area for it to guide to the target. Use the CCIP to get a good idea of where it's going to fly.

One common mistake is dropping the GBU 12 to late, losing the lock and flying way over the target. Dropping it to early means the bomb will either fall short of the target or not make it due to terrain being in the way.

I will check if the tips will help. If not I will make a video and post it here.
I have been at work so I couldn't do it earlier. And now it's late, so I'll check back in tomorrow

First try was with holding R
Second Holding T
Third lower, once I had the box over the target I did not press any lock on button (But was too low IMO)
Pretty much like third, since third was way too low IMO

If anyone can find my noob mistake I will aprreciate it
Rahx Jul 30, 2018 @ 2:38am
p.s The only way I get it to actually hit the target, is by nose diving onto the target and using the target reticle (round circle). But this is of course without any laser guiding. Since apparantly, laser guiding is a fancy word for shine a laser pen at something with no use whatsoever.

@Red
Just ran a test. THANK YOU!!!!
Now I know how to acurately hit something. My mistake was being zoomed in too far at first. If I zoom out to see the reticle, then guide it towards the target, only zooming in for the last few meters I will always hit. (Even without the laser on) This is something I never see in videos. It is always, once they have that lock on, they fly towards it and drop a bomb (I never see the reticle).

But this help and 'fixed' my mistakes.

cheers

People did tell you to use that white reticle, you dont have to be in the camera to use it, just lase the target, exit the camera try to align the white reticle with the target and release, the laser will do the rest
Rahx Jul 30, 2018 @ 8:22am
That's just it. I never see the reticle outside of the camera.
I believe it is linked to one of the aids. And since I have almost everything turned off (only mines shown on the map and the weapon info set to fade are the only things on) I think it basically breaks that part. Will check it out and see which one is the culprit.
One thing people overlook, even players with lots of time and such, is that one can (without much trouble) coordinate very well how to use the external targeting camera view. You just need to bind your controls in such a way that lets you use everything on the fly very easily and fluidly so you can switch between normal and external camera view, all the modes, cycle through your panels ect. (with magnification and night vision/thermal)

The external camera on most of the jets I think, or all I guess, is centered so it isn't exactly facing straight ahead where you would want it for gun/rocket/guided missile attacks. So, if you just directly move it up you can center it around where you will want it to look ahead for those attacks, as opposed to bomb dropping or just looking downward more where the centered view is for the external camera.

I would bind it so you can slew your camera view around easily while you are manuevering the plane, so that you don't easily accidentally move the camera around where you don't want it. If you have a directional "china hat" button on top of a joystick that would be ideal. As opposed to needing to take your hands away and use mouse to move it if you are already using a joystick, if not, ifyou are using mouse then perhaps mouse movement would suffice to move the camera around also if you can make that work.

To really wreck stuff and have a lot of awareness and be able to surveil easily with the attack jets in the game, you ought to bind the controls so as to make maximum usage of your external camera view. Of course, head tracking would also be great for that maybe if you have that, I plan on using that later for other stuff.
