Played with my Rift S using VorpX in 60 minute chunks - flipping awesome

Is a vr headset an improvement over track-ir. The problem with track ir is the fact that when you turn your head beyond a certain angle you are no longer looking at the screen. At least with a vr headset the field of view remains centered in front of you. Resolution issues aside, am I thing along the right lines?

yes. Indeed. That's a actual trackIR problem. :numberone:

Track IR isn't a 1:1 ratio. You can adjust how much your head turn ingame vs in real life.
For instance, personally I have it so that when I turn my head to the right side of the screen my "ingame head" is turned all the way around.
Of course you can decide yourself how much you want it to turn - I just picked that ratio since I found it comfortable to control.

Precisely. If you are turning your head 90 degrees to look 90 degrees in the game, you do not have your TrackIR configured optimally. Same for leaning and zooming in and out. Set up correctly you will use minimal head movement to view all your surroundings.

So as far as VR with Arma 3. Is the rendering 3D or do you just end up with basically head tracking ?

Using VR in Arma 3 is like using a TrackIR that costs twice as much and twice as hard to set up. It would not be a 3D virtual environment. As most people have already commented this, Arma would need to be redesigned from the ground up to include spacial 3D environment.

Look at games like Payday 2, Skyrim and Fallout VR and other FPS game that was ported to VR, especially when it seems like it's a literal direct port and there was no real love put into it (see Payday 2 VR). If Bohemia were to enable proper VR for Arma 3, that's the capacity it would be in: A janky, nausea-inducing, bug ridden port

Appreciate it. I kind of figured this to be the case. Saved me the time of trying it out. I cannot do without my TrackIR in Arma. Will stick to the titles that were made for VR. Half Life Alyx is alot of fun. Im about to start my second time through.

Personally I found using Arma3 with my Oculus Rift S a dream like experience. Okay it's not built for VR, but with VorpX it's immersive and less prone to nausea that some of the other actual VR games out there. Running it in VR was simple too. I also own a TrackIR and while it's good. It's not as good as the Tobii 4c - if you don't want VR, use that - not TrackIR which is cumbersome and going no where
This game kinda chugs along. I don't really see how they can add VR into this game without having to completely refactor their code for some heuristic improvements.
I don't even think they know what code refactoring even is tbh, I remember when they released the 64 bit version and everyone was like "yeah.....finally...".
If I remember correctly this game is made on the shoulders of an older game engine.

Maybe Arma 4.

The game engine is fundamentally the same thing used since Armed Assault. They've come a long way, but the engine is definitely on its last legs.
