I'm sure someone else will have better advice than me, but I'd do the prologue and some (all?) of the first act of the campaign first so you get used to the controls, interface, etc. before joining a multiplayer game. I exclusively do single-player, so someone else will have to suggest servers.

You need mods , Arma3 withouth mods is like eating a toast without ham and cheese.. Check this mod out adds ships and submarines https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KedMil7g7Cw

This is a really bad mod to introduce someone to A3. Over complicated and not part of the core experience.

You don't need mods to enjoy the game. You do need to learn to play though and A3 has complicated controls. I would suggest joining Liberation or King of the Hill servers to practive combat and get used to movement. Once you have learned the basics, I would suggest joining a milsim as they will teach you the advanced nuances of the game as well as train you in the major mods of the game such as ACE and TFAR.

Well i also advice you to play sp first. Unlike COD or BF series ARMA is pretty harder. So play East Wind or Prologue campaigns before you play Multiplayer. This will help you a lot.

Well Arma is not like many other games that have purely/mainly official servers. The most servers in Arma 3 are community servers with different gamemodes -> "Missions". You yourself can make a mission in the editor, anyone can^^ That should give you some perspective on how many different missions are out there. Some Missions are more popular than others there are 4 gamemodes that really blew up in the community and have alot of servers dedicated to hosting said gamemodes.

- King of the Hill:
In king of the Hill you have 3 teams to choose from. RED(OPFOR), BLUE(BLUFOR) and
GREEN(INDEPENDENT) each team tries to get to the center circle and have the most
players in said circle. As long as the team has the most players in the middle they get points
every few minutes, after a team reaches 100 points they win. There are levels, weapons /
vehicles / clothing to unlock and really fun with a team of friends.

- Altis life:
Altis life was made by Tonic and is a roleplaying mission - You play like your character was
you and this was your life on Altis. You can go make money buy cars / stuff and make
decisions like going into illegal stuff like farming drugs / robbing people etc. Everyone in the
game are actual players such as Medics / Cops. On a good server (noone breaking rp / good
admins / community) this can be alot of fun.

- Wasteland:
Again you can choose between teams RED(OPFOR), BLUE(BLUFOR) and
GREEN(INDEPENDENT). RED & BLUE are big teams where everyone in the group plays
together against the other two teams. GREEN is sorta rogue they fight eachother AND the
other teams but you can make smaller teams inside GREEN to play with friends in a squad.
You can go around looting and buying equipment from stores around the map and try to
survive.

- MilSim:
MilSim is not really A MISSION but mostly a sub community roleplaying a Military
organisation doing Missions vs. AI in an actually military chain of command hence the name
MilSim -> Military Simulation. If you want to join MilSim i highly recommend joining a MilSim
dedicated Clan though as the random MilSim Servers (if there are any) usually contain selfish
players that troll.

There are lots of other missions but these are the most common i'd say. Just find out what you like and look for a good server & have fun with it :)

Hope that helped - GL&HF

It's an insult at assume all life servers are because of Tonic. It was in A2, and was much better back then. Not to mention Stealthstick, who was one of the best developers in A2, did half the work to make Altis Life and then Tonic wrote him out of the credit for it. I know this is probably a C&P, just don't like 1 man getting credit for something that has been around far longer than A3. Life servers started in Armed Assault.

I know. But in i thought this was sorta irrelevant to him trying to figure out what to do in the game. I only mentioned it because i thought if he googles "Tonic Altis Life" he'll find more information on the gamemode itself.

Same could be said for most servers. They only use the main Altis Life mission as a base to work with. Most of the big life servers wrote most of their stuff themselves to make their server stand out.

Most of them just added stuff onto Tonic's mission. I don't know any that have redone it from the bottom. Anyway, this is irrelvent. ArmA vetern things lol.
