Or a PS3 controller, with use of 3rd party programs, such as Better DS3 or ScpToolkit.
Xbox controllers have a default control scheme in ArmA - this can be disabled in the control options, if you want the ability to map the buttons yourself.
With a PS3 controller, it can be recognized as an Xbox controller (XInput), wherein you can customize the buttons as with above, or a generic controller (DirectInput), or even as mouse/keyboard input. That is all set in the 3rd party application.
The OP asked if it was possible. Not whether foxhound_709 believed it was a viable choice.
Controllers work very nicely for flying.
EE does amazing things with the Steam controller
