Thats really terrible to be honest, and like E_50_Panzer said, War Thunder had a way more realistinc damage model in arcade mode than this so called military simulator does. Even an RTS game called Men of War: Assault Squad 2 has a more realistic penetration and damage set up for it's tank then this game. The ARMA 3 devs need to a good long look at the future of this game.
I was hoping for more on the penetration system with this tanks update. But I suppose the problem is that this damage system is part of the engine, and I don't know how far they could really get around this. Here's to hoping Arma 4 improves this stuff.
There's a description of how damage is handled in this game. To be honest it's pretty cryptic and somewhat awkward to understand.
I just tested some RPG rounds in the Virtual testing thing part of the game, you hit a hull and you get no feed back except the hull will turn orange or red, I think orange means broken and crew get out and red means everyone dies. That's it, not parts of the hull getting brokwn etc, its like an on/off switch. Pretty rubbish to be honest.
Turns out Bohemia has had to massively underrate the performance of a .50 rifle and anything above a .50 that is not an outright tank caliber or ATGM so that tanks are not turned into swiss cheese by totally impotent firearms. War Thunder's system is just in another league beyond the league that is beyond Arma's. In other words, it's like trying to compare SWAT 4 Elite Force to Arma III King of the Hill for tactical realism... it's just not even possible to honestly make a close comparison because S4:EF is way out of Arma's league in that regard.
Tanks DLC really should have come with an overhauled damage model on the level of WT's. It's great and all that Arma covers all these bases but BI is cutting so many corners in the process that we're in a "jack of all trades, master of none" kind of game. If we're talking platform updates, we need masterful updates and not jack updates.
Granted is the damage system perfect... no not at all... is it the best they can do in a game that has crap tons of other things to calculate, most likely.
Ive played war thunder tank battles, they are fun, but they only had to focus on a single aspect... the tanks, and how they perform. Thus the tanks are more detailed.... more intricate.
Well in ARMA3 you either survive long enough to get away from the broken tank or you die in it or next to it. And 'repair' is your giy doing the same disjointed animation where he holds nothing and waves armes around until magic fixes the tank. It's pure crap at this point mate.
And if they managed to do it then the game would be smal crew/squad based gameplay in and around various tanks etc. Instead it's just bottom line basic.
