Arma 3
Is this game supposed to run like a potato?
Me and my friend have been playing mainly the big KOTH servers. Spawning in, the game runs at around 40 - 50 fps. When getting into the battle, the game runs at 15 - 30. I know it is expected for frames to drop in areas that have a lot going on, but 15 fps is unacceptable, especially with the computer I have.

My PC specs:

- gtx 1080

- i7 4790k

- 16 gb of ram

- 200 gb SSD

In the game, I set the recommended graphics settings. It set everything to the highest, but I turned some stuff down to high, like shadows and textures. I turned anti aliasing down. I turned my draw distance down to 1250. My game still runs at 15 - 30 fps. I honestly dont understand why I cant run the game at at least 60 fps at all times. I know Arma 3 is demanding, but getting at least 60 fps should be easy for my PC to do.

Is there something I am doing wrong? What graphics settings should I have? I would really like some help with this, because playing Arma 3 is very tough when I am getting a measly 15 fps

I have lower specs than that and I get around 20-30+ fps most the time.

well.. tbh 20 - 30 fps is pretty potato... I am wanting 60 fps, and that is all. My specs should handle that
Yes. On multiplayer, never expect more than 40 fps.
Arma 3 is a very CPU heavy game.

Other than that what you can do to optimize is make sure your view distance isn't set too high, vsync is turned off and you're running the 64bit exe

Depends on the gamemode/server!

He would have to get a new mobo and ram also! so if that was the case he might aswell go with a 8th gen for the faster IPC speeds!
i5 8600k, gtx 1070, 16GB RAM @ 3000mhz and the game installed on an ssd I don't drop below 50-70 even on 120 man koth servers. Some old threads talked about how faster RAM increases your fps in arma or something like that, probably BS but who knows. My current cpu is much faster than yours, but even with my old i7 920 which made your cpu look like Usain Bolt in comparison got better frames, so that can't be it either. Is you game on an SSD? That helps smooth out the drops and raises your average fps that way.

Fun thing to do is play single player a little, vs different multiplayer servers

A decent machine will see FPS in the hundreds single player, then 30 on a server.
actually higher graphic setting can make it perform better. Low shadows means it will be rendered on CPU and higher, GPU.

Nah, the shadow thing was "fixed" two years ago, and that was the only setting that worked like this.
I have a Ryzen 3 OC'd and a 1060 6GB and I'm getting a stable 50fps in full KOTH servers with very high settings. Obviously the draw distances need to be adjusted though.
im getting around 37 fps with a i5 8600k and a 1060 3gb
I have much lower specs but get reasonable performance, certainly playable with 30-40 FPS, I turned some settings down but it still looks good.

i5 4670K (OC 4.2GHz)
GTX 970
16GB DDR3 2333MHz RAM
SSD
