Arma 3

Arma 3 lightning old vs new. What do you think?
This is something that has bugged me out since the release of the APEX update back in 2016.
I played Arma 2 quite a lot, both in DayZ servers and TvT missions and up to this date my favorite thing from arma 2 is the lightning style, the colors change completely depending on the time of the day. For example in the morning or sunset you have really warm colors and and a nice orange illumination and at night if there is a clear sky and a full moon you will see things in black, white and a big spectrum of grays (unless you're near a source of light).

The old lightning Arma 3 used was just like that, but unlike the new system, you had more natural colors and defined shadows. See https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ISvwBkIEN2E for an example of what i'm talking about.
You can clearly see that the smooth colors are replaced by more saturated ones, shadows like the ones in the buildings and the far terrain on the hill completly disappear, and the shadows on the soldier's equipment look weird...

I know this is up to personal preference, and probably most people won't even give a ♥♥♥♥ about this aspect of the game, but in my opinion the old lightning system was a lot better than the current one.

SO JUST LET ME KNOW WHAT YOU THINK ABOUT IT.

PS: Water looks dope now tho.

Lighting in Arma2 was a horrible mess, with everything becoming bright like in a nuclear explosion as soon as the sun was blocked, and everything going dark so you couldn't see $hit as soon as the sun was anywhere in the FOV. It was as if you constantly viewed the world through an extremely $hitty camera that overcompensated with regards to exposure.

The new lighting system in Arma3 is the single best improvement over Arma2.

Yeah it was really annoying but as far as arma 2 goes i was only referencing the colors, leaving the brightness issues aside.

Honestly both images look like they were run through a filter.

Personally while I look back on old footage of the old lighting system I do like it. But I think the new one is more realistic and less cartoony.

The problem I have with it is they didn't really give suitable documentation about it. So all the 3rd party maps out there broke, and the map makers from my understanding were left high and dry and had to figure out how to make their maps look good again.

A perfect case in point is the Bamburg, UK map which was part of the 2017 mod. That map looked like it was going to be one of the greatest if not the greatest maps in teh ArmA 3 catalog but the lighting update broke the map, the devs couldn't fix it and it actually killed off the entire mod that looked so promising.

So in summary, I actually like the lighting but they should have offered more support for it.

Not sure about the lighting, but I loved how that dude ran right in your line of fire.... You should have just shot him.... Instead you checked your fire and got killed. Just shoot the dumb [radio static] next time when he walks in front of you.
