If you want something more organized, then I would head past the communities section either here, or on the offical Bistudio forums and have a look around. Most communities use a pre-set modpack to represent their chosen country/army, so having an idea about which kind army you wish to be part of is a good idea.
Similarly there is a huge difference between various communities, from the shouty drill-sergeant, to the more relaxed groups that take it easy.
I'm mostly looking for casual play - I haven't played Arma 3 in a long bit and I don't want to embarrass myself in one of the more hardcore servers until I'm satisfied with myself.
Once I can learn all the controls and how-to's (like flying helicopers/planes) then I'll be going for a more hardcore experience. But for now - I'll be more focused on casual gameplay :).
Yeah, Arma is huge with all their different communities I feel like it's hard for a new player to get the hard experience out of it D:
FIRST OFF: if you want to get a good feel for the controls for flying choppers, you should go into multiplayer, host your own server, then do any of the "support" style missions, that will teach you everything you need to know on troop transport, sling loading, basic flying and basic CAS, etc. it's a good place to practice since most public servers don't usually aprove of people learning how to fly on the public servers. you can also practive things in the zeus style missions by selecting the zeus slot, spawning some things in, and just remote controlling them to get a feel for the controls.
In terms of casual communities with open Public servers, the big 2 are Ahoyworld and 77th JSOC. I'll drop some links below:
Ahoyworld: https://forums.ahoyworld.net/
77th: http://www.77th-jsoc.com/
These are the two that almost always have good population on there servers, but there's also the official Bohemia servers you can try out.
Bypassing the casual phase is always a bit difficult as many other communities are smaller and hard to find, in addition to the fact that many are wasteland or Arma 3 life server networks. if you're ever looking for something in particular, feel free to ask, I've been around ever since Arma 2 and there's a community anywhere around the internet of things for anything.
I hope this helps,
-Liru
